The city impresses with its colorful house fronts, the traditional history of clipfish production, and a lively maritime flair on the Norwegian west coast. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include a ride on the world's oldest public transport company, the Sundbåten ferry, the modern architecture of the Kirkelandet Kirke, and the impressive panoramic view from the Varden viewpoint. Cruise ships dock at the centrally located Storkaia pier, from which the city center and all sights are easily accessible in just a few minutes' walk thanks to the prime location.
As a charming coastal city with a cruise port located right in its heart, Kristiansund offers excellent accessibility, ensuring a stress-free arrival. Most cruise ships dock directly at Storkaia or Devoldholmen, putting you right in the city center on the island of Kirkelandet.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Kristiansund Airport, Kvernberget (KSU), located just about 8 kilometers east of the city center. From there, convenient flight connections are available to major Norwegian cities such as Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim. Taxis are available for the transfer to the port, taking you to the terminal in about 15-16 minutes. Alternatively, city buses (e.g., lines 801 and 802) run regularly every 20 to 30 minutes from the airport to the center, with a travel time of around 15-25 minutes.
Auto
Arriving by car to Kristiansund is comfortable and offers picturesque views thanks to good road connections. The city can be reached via the E39 highway as well as the Rv70. A special attraction nearby is the famous Atlantic Ocean Road (Rv 64), which is located only about 30 minutes' drive from the city center and has been toll-free since July 2020. Designated parking spaces for buses and tour operators are available directly at the cruise pier. For individual long-term parkers, using city parking garages or inquiring about local hotel offers is recommended.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Particularly after a long journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay in one of the centrally located hotels in Kristiansund is recommended to start your cruise feeling relaxed. Since the port is located directly in the city center, you can easily reach the ship on foot from many hotels. This also allows you to enjoy the maritime atmosphere and the amenities of the city even before embarkation.
Check-in & Einschiffung
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly, and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
