Frøya, an island municipality in the Norwegian province of Trøndelag, is an increasingly popular destination for expedition cruises and smaller ships. Thanks to good road connections and flight links, the port is easily accessible, with ships typically docking at the quay of Sistranda, the island's main settlement, providing convenient access to the center.
Airplane
The nearest international airport is Trondheim Airport Værnes (TRD), located approximately 108 kilometers from Frøya. From there, transfer options by bus and car are available, with the total travel time to Frøya taking about 2 hours and 45 minutes. A closer alternative is Ørland Airport (OLA), about 38.7 kilometers away, which primarily offers flights from Oslo and allows for a transfer time of approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes. For a relaxed journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay, for example in Trondheim, is recommended due to the longer flight and transfer times.
Car
Frøya is excellently connected to the Norwegian mainland via the Fv714 highway. This route leads through two impressive underwater tunnels: the Frøyatunnel (5.3 km) and the Hitratunnel (5.6 km), which connect the islands of Frøya and Hitra, as well as Hitra with the mainland. The Frøyatunnel has been toll-free since 2010. The drive from Trondheim to Frøya takes about 2 hours by car. Parking for cruise guests is generally found in Sistranda, the island's main town, near the pier.
Train and Public Transport
For travelers wishing to arrive by train, Trondheim Central Station is the relevant hub. From Trondheim, you can easily reach Frøya by bus. Direct bus connections to Sistranda take around 2 hours and 42 minutes to 2 hours and 49 minutes, with these buses typically running once a day. Alternatively, you can use the Kystekspressen express boats from Trondheim Hurtigbåtterminal to Sandstad on the neighboring island of Hitra, from where further bus and ferry connections to Frøya exist. The travel time from Trondheim city center to the Dyrøy ferry terminal on Frøya is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will typically receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
