Port information & tips for Fosnavåg
Fosnavåg is a charming maritime jewel on the Norwegian west coast, offering visitors an authentic experience far from the main tourist crowds. The town impresses with its protected location in the middle of a stunning archipelago and harmoniously combines modern architecture with the traditional fishing culture of the Sunnmøre region. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the Sunnmørsbadet for relaxing hours, the informative Herøy Kystmuseum, and excursions to the nearby bird island of Runde with its famous puffins. Ships dock at the central quay in the port of Fosnavåg, making the charming town center with its cozy cafés and shops easily accessible directly on foot thanks to the short distances.
Fosnavåg, an idyllic port town on Norway's west coast, is a popular destination for smaller cruises and offers a picturesque backdrop for your journey. Due to its island location, arrival requires some planning but is easily manageable thanks to good connections via the nearest airport and ferry links. There are no separate terminals; embarkation usually takes place at the centrally located harbor area.
Airplane
The nearest major airport is Ålesund Airport, Vigra (AES), located approximately 63 to 75 kilometers from Fosnavåg. Direct flights from the DACH region are rare; connections via Oslo (OSL) or other European hubs are often necessary. The pure travel time by car and ferry can take about 1 hour 7 minutes. Due to the travel time and potential connecting flights, arriving the day before is often recommended to start your cruise experience relaxed.
Transfer and local arrival
From Ålesund Airport (AES), continuing to Fosnavåg by taxi and ferry is the fastest option. Alternatively, use a convenient combination of bus and express boat: take a bus from the airport to the express boat quay on Valderøya, from there an express boat to Hareid, and then a local bus (e.g., line 330) directly to the Fosnavåg terminal. The total travel time with public transport can range between 2 hours 17 minutes and 3 hours 41 minutes. Taxi and shuttle services from the airport are a comfortable alternative for a direct connection.
Car and Pre-cruise Hotel
Fosnavåg is connected to the mainland via well-maintained roads and bridges, including the Eiksundtunellen, which connects Hareidlandet with the mainland to the south or east. From the direction of Ålesund, the route leads via a car ferry from Sulesund to Hareidlandet and then over the Herøy Bridge to Fosnavåg. Local parking is available in the town center and at the Fosnavåg Guest Harbour. For a relaxed embarkation and to bridge longer travel times, an overnight stay in one of the local hotels in Fosnavåg, such as the Thon Hotel Fosnavåg, or in the better-connected Ålesund is recommended.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will typically receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
