San Francisco is the shining jewel of the US West Coast, welcoming cruise guests with its iconic skyline and the unmistakable maritime charm of the Bay Area. In addition, the lively Pier 39 with its famous sea lions, the culinary marketplace in the Ferry Building, and the bustling Fisherman’s Wharf are located in the immediate vicinity of the port. Cruise ships dock at the modern James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27, which, thanks to its central location on the Embarcadero, offers direct access to the city center while also serving as an ideal starting point for explorations on foot or with the historic Cable Car.
The Port of San Francisco, featuring the modern James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27 and the supplementary Pier 35, is located directly on the picturesque Embarcadero. Thanks to its central location between the Bay Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf, guests can easily reach the terminals from the airport or the city center, enjoying views of the bay upon arrival.
Airplane
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is located about 24 kilometers south of the port and is served directly by major hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich, or Zurich. Additionally, Oakland International Airport (OAK), located approximately 32 kilometers away, offers a good alternative for domestic connecting flights and international connections, providing quick access to the port as well.
Transfer & Shuttle
From SFO airport, you can reach the Embarcadero station with the BART rapid transit system in about 30 minutes, from where the terminals are just a short ride away by taxi or the historic F-Line streetcar. Alternatively, cruise lines offer organized shuttles, and ride-sharing services are also available at any time for a direct, comfortable journey to the pier.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight time and the time difference, staying overnight before your cruise in one of the numerous hotels at Fisherman’s Wharf or in the Financial District is very advantageous. Many accommodations are within walking distance of the piers and allow for a relaxed start to your vacation, as well as time for sightseeing at local landmarks such as Alcatraz or the Golden Gate Bridge.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan accordingly and allow sufficient time for your journey to the port, and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
