Port information & tips for Rudyerd Bay (AK)

Popof Island is a hidden gem in Alaska's remote Shumagin Islands and delights as an authentic destination off the beaten path. The island impresses with its rugged, untouched nature, a rich Aleut culture, and impressive wildlife ranging from majestic bald eagles to an imposing herd of bison. Visitors can discover architectural treasures like the historic St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church and enjoy the lively atmosphere in the harbor of Sand Point, which is home to one of the state's largest fishing fleets. Cruise ships dock at the Sand Point City Dock, located in the immediate vicinity of the town center, providing guests with convenient access to local attractions and picturesque hiking trails thanks to its central location.

Popof Island, with its main town of Sand Point, is a remote yet fascinating destination in Alaska's Shumagin Islands and is typically visited as a port of call for expedition cruises. Arriving from the DACH region requires several flight segments and careful planning to reach this Arctic paradise.

Airplane

The primary way to arrive is by plane. Travelers from the DACH region first fly to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) in Alaska. From Anchorage, there are direct regional flight connections to Sand Point Municipal Airport (SDP) on Popof Island. Please note that these domestic flights can be weather-dependent, and flexible travel planning with sufficient buffer time is advisable. Sand Point Airport is small and functional, with a single terminal.

Local Transfers & Ferry

From Sand Point Municipal Airport (SDP), the community of Sand Point, where the port is also located, is easily accessible. Public transportation in the traditional sense does not exist on Popof Island, so transfers are based on private arrangements or taxis. For a different perspective or as part of a longer journey, the Alaska Marine Highway ferry calls at Sand Point twice a month between May and October, connecting it with other Alaskan coastal communities.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long international flights and the subsequent, potentially weather-dependent regional flights to Popof Island, an overnight stay in Anchorage before the onward flight is strongly recommended. This ensures a relaxed start to the trip and minimizes the risk of missed connecting flights. In Sand Point itself, there are some local accommodation options, including a motel and bed & breakfasts, should an additional night on-site be desired.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
