Port information & tips for Nome (AK)
Newport is the glamorous jewel of Rhode Island and is considered the epitome of New England elegance. The maritime atmosphere of the City of Mansions delights visitors with its historic charm, world-class sailing waters, and the magnificent heritage of the Gilded Age. Absolute highlights include the legendary Vanderbilt residence, The Breakers, as well as the picturesque Cliff Walk, which offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic and grand estates. Larger cruise ships use the central tender pier at Perrotti Park, while smaller vessels occasionally dock at South Alofsin Pier. Thanks to the excellent location in the heart of downtown, guests can easily reach the famous Bowen’s Wharf and historic Thames Street within just a few minutes' walk.
The port of Newport on Rhode Island is a charming destination that primarily serves as a tender port. Larger cruise ships anchor in Narragansett Bay, and passengers are transported by tender boats to the centrally located Perotti Park in Downtown Newport. Due to the long journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay the day before is always recommended to start your cruise experience relaxed.
Airplane
For travel from the DACH region, two airports are relevant: Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport (PVD) in Warwick is the nearest major airport, approximately 43 kilometers from Newport. The driving time by car is about 30 to 40 minutes. PVD is served by major US airlines such as American, Delta, and JetBlue. Alternatively, the larger Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in Massachusetts offers a wider selection of long-haul flights. It is located about 98 kilometers north of Newport, with a correspondingly longer transfer time.
Transfer & Local Connections
From T.F. Green Airport (PVD), you can easily reach the cruise port area in Newport by taxi or pre-booked private transfer. Taxis cost about 70 to 90 US dollars. Private transport services are also available from Boston Logan Airport (BOS), although they are correspondingly more expensive due to the distance. Those arriving by car or using a rental car can reach Newport via Interstate 95 North and then Route 138 East, which leads over the toll Newport Bridge. Parking is available at the paid Gateway Parking Lot at the Newport Transportation Center on America's Cup Avenue, just a short walk from the tender pier at Perotti Park.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
An overnight stay in Newport before embarkation day is highly recommended after a long-haul flight from the DACH region to avoid jet lag and board the ship well-rested. Numerous hotels are located in and around Downtown Newport and are thus ideally situated to easily reach the tender pier at Perotti Park. The Newport Marriott, for example, is located directly next to the Newport Transportation Center, which in turn is only one block away from the tender pier. This ensures a relaxed start to your cruise vacation.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
