Car & Ferry
Travel to the mainland is via Interstate 75 (I-75), which connects both Mackinaw City in the south and St. Ignace in the north of the Mackinac Bridge. Guarded short-term and long-term parking spaces are available at both ferry terminals, which are served by providers such as Shepler's Ferry or Star Line/Arnold Transit. For day visitors in Mackinaw City, there are often free day parking spaces with a shuttle to the ferry dock. The crossing to the island takes only about 16 to 20 minutes with the high-speed ferries. Your luggage is conveniently transported from the mainland to the island, often even directly to your accommodation.
Airplane & Transfer
The nearest regional airport is Pellston Regional Airport (PLN), about 20 to 30 minutes drive south of Mackinaw City. Another option is Chippewa County International Airport (CIU), around 30 minutes drive north of St. Ignace. Shuttle services such as Mackinaw Shuttle or Northern Transport & Shuttle as well as taxi and ride-sharing options to the ferry terminals are available from both airports. For international guests from the DACH region, we recommend traveling via major hubs and taking a domestic flight to one of these regional airports to then relaxingly start the last leg of the journey.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
For a stress-free cruise on Mackinac Island, a pre-cruise hotel is highly recommended, especially after long international flights. You can relax for a night on the mainland in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace or arrive directly on the island. Many hotels on Mackinac Island are located just a few steps from the ferry dock and offer a practical luggage service that brings your travel luggage directly from the ferry to your room. This allows for a peaceful start to your unique island experience.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
