Port information & tips for Juneau (AK)

Juneau is the fascinating capital of Alaska and an essential highlight of every Inside Passage cruise. The city is spectacularly situated between the Gastineau Channel and steep mountain flanks, giving it a unique atmosphere of untouched wilderness and bustling pioneer spirit. Impressive attractions in the immediate vicinity include the Mount Roberts Tramway, which offers panoramic views over the fjords, as well as the legendary Red Dog Saloon and the Alaska State Capitol. Cruise ships usually dock at the Franklin Street Dock or the Cruise Ship Terminal, from where the historic city center is reachable in just a few steps. Thanks to its central location, visitors also quickly reach the excursion buses to the Mendenhall Glacier and experience the wild beauty of Alaska immediately after docking.

Juneau, the capital of Alaska, is a geographical rarity as it is only accessible by air or sea. Cruise ships dock at various central piers, such as Franklin Dock or the slightly further south AJ Dock, from which the charming city center is usually easily accessible on foot or by shuttle.

Airplane

Travel from the DACH region is via Juneau International Airport (JNU), located about 15 kilometers from the port. Since there are no direct connections from Europe, travelers use convenient connecting flights via hubs such as Seattle (SEA) or Anchorage (ANC), from where Alaska Airlines or Delta fly directly to the capital in about two hours.

Transfer & Shuttle

From the airport, you can reach the terminals in the city center in about 20 minutes by taxi or rideshare provider. Guests whose ships dock at the AJ Dock, located about 1.6 kilometers to the south, also use the efficient shuttle buses that run at short intervals between the berth and the central meeting point at the Goldbelt Tramway in the heart of the city.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long flight and the time difference, it is recommended to arrive at least one day before embarkation. An overnight stay in Downtown Juneau not only allows for a relaxed start to the cruise, but also offers the opportunity for an excursion to the impressive Mendenhall Glacier, which can be reached in just 20 minutes by car or the Glacier Shuttle.
