Port information & tips for Nawiliwili (Kauai, Hawaii)

Nawiliwili is the picturesque gateway to the Garden Isle of Kauai, welcoming travelers with a breathtaking backdrop of lush green mountains and the deep blue Pacific. The relaxed island atmosphere is immediately palpable, as the port is nestled in a sheltered bay while simultaneously serving as an ideal starting point for world-class nature experiences. In the immediate vicinity, the golden sands of Kalapaki Beach, the historic Alekoko Fishpond, and the magnificent Kilohana Plantation beckon. Cruise ships dock at the Nawiliwili Harbor Cruise Terminal, from which the center of Lihue is only about three kilometers away. Thanks to short distances and convenient shuttle services, the charming downtown area and nearby shopping destinations can be reached easily and comfortably at any time.

The port of Nawiliwili in Lihue is the central maritime gateway to the Garden Isle of Kauai and stands out due to its location directly on the southeast coast in the immediate vicinity of the regional airport. Ships dock directly at the pier on Wilcox Road, meaning guests benefit from short distances to the island's most important logistical points.

Airplane

Arrival from the DACH region typically takes place via major US hubs or Honolulu (HNL) to Lihue Airport (LIH). The airport is located only about three kilometers from the cruise terminal, so the onward journey by taxi, rideshare, or shuttle service takes only about ten minutes and enables a comfortable start to the vacation.

Rental Car & Transfer

The port is excellently connected to the road network via the main arteries Kapule Highway (Hwy 51) and Nawiliwili Road (Hwy 58). Many travelers use rental car stations at the airport, with free shuttle buses from the major rental companies regularly commuting between the terminal and the pickup stations, providing a seamless transition to individual island exploration.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long distance and a time difference of up to twelve hours, an arrival on Kauai at least one day before departure is recommended. Accommodations at the directly adjacent Kalapaki Beach not only offer perfect relaxation after the long-haul flight but also allow for an absolutely stress-free embarkation day thanks to their proximity to the port.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
