Homer, the "end of the road" on picturesque Kachemak Bay, is considered the halibut fishing capital of the world and enchants visitors with a pristine natural backdrop on the Gulf of Alaska. Cruise ships dock at the Deep Water Dock, located directly on the iconic Homer Spit. Thanks to regular shuttle buses, guests can easily and quickly reach the city center about eight kilometers away, as well as numerous galleries and cafes.
Homer in Alaska, known as the "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World," is a charming destination at the end of the Sterling Highway. Cruise ships dock at the Deep Water Dock, located at the outer end of the approximately 7.2-kilometer-long Homer Spit. The port area is well-connected, but the main town of Homer is about 10 to 15 minutes away by car.
Airplane
For travelers from the DACH region, arriving by plane is the most common choice. The nearest major international airport is Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC), located about 354 to 359 kilometers from Homer. From Anchorage, there are direct connecting flights to the regional Homer Airport (HOM), which is only about 3 to 5 kilometers east of the city center and is reached in approximately 50 minutes of flight time. Homer Airport provides a quick connection to the Homer Spit.
Onward Travel to the Port
From Anchorage International Airport (ANC), you can either take a connecting flight to Homer Airport (HOM) or drive the scenic Sterling Highway (Alaska Route 1) with a rental car. The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours and offers impressive views of the Kenai Peninsula. Alternatively, shuttle services such as Alaska Bus Company and Red Eye Rides are available for the route from Anchorage. From Homer Airport (HOM) or the city center, you can easily reach the port area on the Homer Spit via local taxis or shuttles. Using a local shuttle or trolley service from the cruise terminal to Homer city center costs about 5 to 10 US dollars for a day ticket.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Local Tips
Due to the long journey from Europe, an overnight stay in Anchorage or directly in Homer is recommended before your cruise to start your adventure relaxed. Homer offers a selection of hotels and lodges, many with views of Kachemak Bay. Short-term and long-term parking is available at the port itself; weekly and monthly passes can be purchased in advance. Note that the Homer Spit, where the cruise ships dock, is a lively area with shops and restaurants, while the actual city center requires a separate drive.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
