Port information & tips for Unga Island (AK)

Bar Harbor is the picturesque gateway to Acadia National Park and a sparkling jewel on the rugged coast of Maine. The charming town captivates visitors with its maritime flair, historic Gilded Age mansions, and an inviting atmosphere between the deep blue Atlantic and dense forests. Absolute highlights include the breathtaking Acadia National Park, the idyllic Shore Path directly along the water, and the fascinating Abbe Museum. Since Bar Harbor is a tender port, ships anchor in Frenchman Bay, and guests reach the Town Pier on West Street comfortably via tender boats. This landing site is located right in the bustling town center, making cozy cafes and first-class seafood restaurants accessible in just a few steps.

Bar Harbor is a charming tender port in Maine and can be optimally reached by guests from the DACH region by plane in combination with convenient transfers. Cruise ships anchor in the picturesque Frenchman Bay, from where tender boats take you directly to the Town Pier in the heart of the charming downtown area. Since January 2024, the number of cruise passengers landing daily in Bar Harbor has been limited to 1,000, which reduces the arrival of larger ships and makes the experience in town more relaxed.

Airplane

International travelers usually land at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), about 450 kilometers (5 hours drive) away, which offers a wide range of direct connections. Alternatively, Bangor International Airport (BGR), about 80 kilometers (just over an hour's drive) away, is the nearest international airport. In addition, the smaller Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (BHB) is only about 15-20 kilometers away and offers connections to Boston via Cape Air.

Transfer & Shuttle

From Bangor International Airport (BGR), convenient bus connections from Downeast Transportation Inc. are available, taking you to Bar Harbor in about 1 hour and 25 minutes. Taxis and various shuttle services also offer direct trips to the port, with a taxi ride taking about 1 hour and 18 minutes. From the closer BHB Airport, you can use taxis or the seasonal Island Explorer bus. Locally in Bar Harbor, the free Island Explorer bus ensures easy mobility between the city center and Acadia National Park.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Given the long flight times from the DACH region and the tender operations in Bar Harbor, an overnight stay before embarkation is highly recommended. You will find numerous charming hotels directly in the city center of Bar Harbor, such as the Harborside Hotel, Spa & Marina or the West Street Hotel, which allow for a relaxed arrival and offer short distances to the Town Pier. Staying the day before also facilitates acclimatization and provides initial opportunities to explore the beauty of the coastal region and Acadia National Park.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
