Port information & tips for Portoferraio (Elba)
Portoferraio is the history-steeped main town of the island of Elba and welcomes travelers with an impressive panorama of azure water and pastel-colored houses. The port city exudes a very special Mediterranean charm thanks to its horseshoe-shaped bay and the imposing fortifications from the Medici era. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the Forte Stella and Forte Falcone fortresses as well as the Villa dei Mulini, Napoleon's former residence during his exile. Cruise ships dock at the central Alto Fondale quay or at the Darsena Medicea mooring point. Thanks to this prime location, the city center with its winding alleys, cozy cafes, and the popular pebble beach Spiaggia delle Ghiaie is only a few minutes' walk from the pier.
Portoferraio on Elba, an enchanting island in the Tuscan Archipelago, is a popular destination for cruisers and is easily accessible thanks to regular ferry connections from the mainland. The port is centrally located in the town, allowing convenient access to the historic old town directly from the ship. Smaller cruise ships often dock directly at the pier, while larger ships anchor in the bay and comfortably bring their guests to the Darsena Medicea in the heart of the town by tender.
Car & Ferry
Getting to the ferry port of Piombino, the gateway to Elba, is straightforward thanks to good highway connections. From Northern Italy (e.g., Milan), you can reach Piombino via the A1 and A12 (Rosignano Marittimo exit), followed by the SS1 Aurelia and signs for Venturina-Isola d'Elba and Piombino Marittima. From Southern Italy (e.g., Rome), use the A12/E80 to Grosseto, then the SS1 Aurelia to the Venturina-Isola d'Elba exit. Numerous ferries operated by Moby Lines, Toremar, Blu Navy, and Corsica Sardinia Ferries run from Piombino to Portoferraio. The crossing takes about one hour on average, with fast ferries taking only 40 to 55 minutes. Early booking of ferry tickets, especially with a vehicle, is recommended during peak season. Guarded short-term and long-term parking is available directly at the port in Piombino. There are also free parking options near the harbor in Portoferraio, such as on Viale Elba.
Train & Ferry
Travel by train leads to the Piombino Marittima station, which is conveniently located directly at the ferry port, allowing for a short walk to the terminal. For travelers arriving from further away, some train connections end at the Campiglia Marittima main station (on the Genoa-Rome line). From there, you can easily reach Piombino Marittima in about 20 minutes by feeder train or bus (line 200 "Elba Link" or 02A from Autolinee Toscane). Bus schedules from Campiglia Marittima to the port are available on the AT Autolinee Toscane website. From Piombino Marittima, you continue your journey relaxed by ferry to Portoferraio; the crossing takes around one hour.
Airplane & Transfer
For a quick journey to the cruise port of Portoferraio, Marina di Campo Airport (EBA) on Elba is an option, located about 18 kilometers away. From there, you can reach Portoferraio comfortably by taxi in about 15 to 25 minutes or affordably by bus line 116 in about 21 minutes. Alternatively, you can fly to the nearest larger airport on the mainland, Pisa International Airport (PSA), which is approximately 110 kilometers from Piombino. From Pisa, you can reach the Piombino Marittima ferry port directly by train (possibly with a change in Campiglia Marittima), from where you take the ferry to Elba. An overnight stay in Piombino or on Elba prior to your cruise is recommended for longer air travel to ensure a relaxed start to your adventure.
Check-in & Embarkation
