Port information & tips for La Maddalena (Sardinia)
La Maddalena is the enchanting heart of the archipelago of the same name off the coast of Sardinia and is considered one of the most exclusive destinations in the Mediterranean. The charming port city welcomes visitors with an elegant Italian flair, historic facades, and crystal-clear, turquoise waters that surround the entire island. Cultural highlights include the lively Piazza Umberto I and the national monument Casa di Garibaldi on the neighboring island of Caprera, which is connected by a bridge. Smaller cruise ships and yachts dock directly at the central Banchina Poste or the Molo Sanità, allowing guests to reach the historic center immediately and enjoy the maritime atmosphere and first-class restaurants comfortably on foot.
La Maddalena, an enchanting island paradise in northeastern Sardinia, is easily accessible for cruise guests via a short ferry connection from the mainland port of Palau. Although there are no direct cruise terminals in the classic sense, smaller ships often dock in the main town, while larger ships use tenders.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Olbia Costa Smeralda (OLB), located about 35 to 42 kilometers from Palau. For a fast and comfortable onward journey to Palau, a private transfer is recommended, taking about 44 to 48 minutes and starting at approximately 116 Euro for up to four people, depending on the provider. Alternatively, you can use the ARST bus (Line 601), which runs once daily directly from the airport to Palau and takes around 1 hour 28 minutes. Rental cars are widely available at Olbia Airport and offer maximum flexibility for the drive to Palau and exploring Sardinia.
