Port information & tips for Krk
Krk is the enchanting main town of the "Golden Island" of the same name in the Croatian Kvarner Bay and is considered one of the oldest cultural centers of the Adriatic. The picturesque port town fascinates with its medieval backdrop, while winding stone alleys, Venetian palaces, and the azure sea radiate an incomparable Mediterranean elegance. In the immediate vicinity, the historical Frankopanen-Festung and the magnificent Kathedrale von Krk with its iconic bell tower invite exploration. Cruise ships usually dock directly at Riva Krk, the central pier on the lively waterfront promenade. Thanks to this prime location, guests find themselves immediately in the vibrant city center and can easily reach the most important sights and charming boutiques within a few minutes on foot.
The island of Krk in Croatia is easily accessible thanks to its bridge connection to the mainland and its own airport, offering cruise guests a pleasant journey. The port in Krk Town serves as the central anchor point for embarkation.
Car
Arriving by car is convenient via the Krk Bridge, which connects the island to the mainland and has fortunately been toll-free since June 15, 2020. From the DACH region, the A1 and A6/A7 motorways lead directly towards Rijeka and the bridge. Parking is available in Krk Town, and specialized tour operators often offer guarded long-term parking at ports for around €80 per week.
Airplane
Rijeka Airport (RJK) is located directly on the island of Krk, near Omišalj, making it the closest arrival point by plane. The distance to Krk Town is only about 20 to 26 kilometers, allowing for a short transfer time of around 25 to 27 minutes. Rijeka Airport is well-connected with direct flights from various German cities such as Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, and Munich. From the airport to the port, taxis (approx. €60–80), direct bus connections (approx. €1, travel time 39 min.), and private transfers are available, guaranteeing a comfortable and stress-free way to the ship. If your flight arrives late, an overnight stay in one of the numerous hotels on Krk may be recommended.
Train
Although Krk itself has no direct rail connection, arriving by train via Rijeka main station on the mainland is a good option. Rijeka is easily reachable from Munich, Vienna, and Zurich with direct night trains or daytime connections. From Rijeka station, regular bus services take you directly to the bus station in Krk Town in about 1 hour and 25 minutes. This onward journey allows for a relaxed transition to the cruise port.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
