Port information & tips for Kangerlussuaq
Kangerlussuaq is the spectacular gateway to Greenland's Arctic wilderness and fascinates as one of the few places on the island with direct access to the eternal ice. Located at the end of the over 160-kilometer-long Sondre Strømfjord, the settlement offers an impressive tundra landscape and serves as an ideal starting point for adventures in untouched nature. Highlights such as the massive Russell Glacier, the famous viewpoint Point 660 on the Greenland Ice Sheet, as well as exciting musk ox safaris are easily accessible from here. Since large ships lie at anchor in the deep fjord, landing is by tender boat at Kangerlussuaq Harbor. From this landing stage, visitors reach the town center, located about 12 kilometers away, in approximately 20 minutes thanks to organized shuttle buses.
As Greenland's central air traffic hub, Kangerlussuaq is the most important gateway for expedition cruises and is located at the end of the 190-kilometer-long Sondre Stromfjord. Since the waters at the pier are too shallow for large ships, embarkation takes place conveniently by tender boat or Zodiac directly from the small harbor basin.
Airplane
Kangerlussuaq Airport (SFJ) represents the primary connection for travelers from the DACH region and is regularly served via the Copenhagen (CPH) hub. The flight time from Denmark is around 4.5 hours, with many cruise lines offering directly coordinated charter flights from Frankfurt or Munich, enabling a synchronized arrival in the Arctic.
Transfer & Shuttle
The approximately 13-kilometer route between the airport and the docking point in the harbor is reliably covered by organized shuttle buses. This journey over the local gravel road takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is usually managed by the cruise lines, ensuring that luggage transport from the tarmac to the cabin is direct and uncomplicated.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the weather-dependent flight conditions in the Arctic and the long journey, an overnight stay before embarkation is recommended. Located directly in the airport building, Hotel Kangerlussuaq offers comfortable rooms for a relaxed start; additionally, accommodations such as the Polar Lodge or the Old Camp provide an initial glimpse into Greenlandic nature and the nearby ice cap.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the harbor accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
