Ilulissat is the shining jewel of Greenland and the fascinating heart of the spectacular Disko Bay. The town impresses with its colorful wooden houses and breathtaking views of monumental icebergs drifting majestically through the crystal-clear water. Absolute highlights include the architecturally stunning Ilulissat Icefjord Centre and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, whose picturesque hiking trails lead directly to the historic Inuit settlement of Sermermiut. Cruise ships use the central port of Ilulissat (Ilulissat Havn) or anchor in the bay, with the tender pier located directly in the lively town center. From here, all sights, local cafes, and departure points for boat trips are easily accessible within a few minutes' walk thanks to the short distances.
Ilulissat, located on the impressive Disko Bay in Greenland, is a unique cruise destination that guests primarily reach by air or by ship. Since no roads connect the settlements, most cruise ships anchor in the bay and use tender boats to bring passengers to the harbor, which is just a short walk from the city center.
Airplane
Ilulissat Airport (JAV) is the primary gateway to the city and is located only 2.8 to 4 kilometers northeast of the city center. For travelers from the DACH region, flights typically go via Copenhagen (CPH) to Kangerlussuaq (SFJ) or Nuuk (GOH) with subsequent domestic flights with Air Greenland to Ilulissat. Alternatively, Icelandair offers direct connections from Reykjavik-Keflavik International Airport (KEF) to Ilulissat during the summer season. A flight from Frankfurt to Ilulissat takes approximately 7 to 9 hours, including a layover in Iceland. An expansion of the airport with a longer runway and a new terminal is scheduled to be completed by October 2026, enabling more direct international flight connections in the future.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Ilulissat Airport (JAV), you can easily reach the city center by taxi in about 5 to 10 minutes. The cost for a taxi ride from the airport to the hotels in the center is around 140 DKK. Many hotels in Ilulissat also offer a shuttle service, which is often included in the room rate, to facilitate transfers from the airport or to the harbor. Although the city is compact and many sights are within walking distance, taxis are available to make longer distances or transfers to the pier quick and uncomplicated.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey and potential flight schedule adjustments, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel in Ilulissat is recommended at least one day before embarkation. This allows for a relaxed start to your cruise experience. The city offers a selection of hotels and guesthouses, many with impressive views of Disko Bay and the famous Icefjord, such as Hotel Arctic and Hotel Icefiord. Numerous accommodations are centrally located and provide easy access to local attractions as well as transfer services.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
