Port information & tips for Trier
Trier is the oldest city in Germany and a brilliant highlight of any Moselle cruise, enchanting visitors with its history spanning over 2,000 years. The picturesque location in the idyllic Moselle Valley creates a relaxed atmosphere, while at the same time an impressive density of UNESCO World Heritage Sites shapes the historic cityscape. Outstanding sights include the monumental Roman city gate Porta Nigra, the magnificent Trier Cathedral, and the ancient Imperial Baths. River cruise ships usually dock at the central berth at the Zurlaubener Ufer, from where travelers can easily and comfortably reach the charming old town and the bustling main market square via a short, approximately 15-minute walk along the waterfront promenade.
Trier, a popular port of call for Mosel cruises, is easily accessible from the DACH region thanks to its central location and good transport connections. The ships usually dock directly on the banks of the Mosel and are therefore close to the historic city center.
Car
Trier is easily accessible by car thanks to its good connections to the highway network, including the A1 and A64. Parking facilities such as the "Parkplatz Schiffsanleger" are available for travelers on the banks of the Mosel, close to the ship piers, offering affordable daily parking rates. In addition, there are providers offering parking solutions near the port specifically tailored to cruise passengers. Alternatively, the free Park & Ride parking spaces at the Messepark or at the Trier-Nord traffic circle can be used, from which there are bus connections to the city center.
Train
Trier Hauptbahnhof (main station) is an important hub for regional rail traffic and enables convenient travel from all directions. From there, you can reach the central docking points on the Mosel and Trier city center comfortably by taxi or local bus lines in just a few minutes, allowing you to start your cruise experience directly.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Luxembourg (LUX), only about 33.8 kilometers away, which you can reach in around 40 minutes by car or about 50 minutes by bus line 302. Another option is Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), about 49.3 kilometers from Trier, with a travel time of approximately 60 minutes by car or Flixbus. For international arrivals from the wider DACH region, Frankfurt am Main Airport (FRA) is also an option, located around 141.8 kilometers away, offering good train and bus connections to Trier. Arriving the day before is recommended for longer flight connections to ensure a relaxed start to your Mosel cruise.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly, and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination area—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
