Port information & tips for Sankt Goar

Sankt Goar is a picturesque jewel in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley and an essential stop on any Rhine river cruise. The town impresses with its spectacular location at the foot of steep vineyards and directly opposite the legendary Loreley Rock, creating an incomparably romantic backdrop. Outstanding sights include the imposing Burg Rheinfels, the largest fortress ruins on the Middle Rhine, as well as the late Gothic Stiftskirche with its precious frescoes. Cruise ships dock at the central berths directly on the Heerstraße, allowing guests to comfortably reach the historic city center and cozy wine taverns in just a few minutes' walk due to the immediate proximity.

Sankt Goar, nestled in the picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, is a popular stop for river cruises and is easily accessible from the DACH region thanks to its central location. The ship piers are located directly on the banks of the Rhine and are easily accessible from the town center, with the KD pier also being barrier-free.

Car

Arrival by car is convenient via the A61 motorway. Coming from the direction of Cologne, take the Pfalzfeld exit, from where Sankt Goar is reached in about 10 minutes via the B9. From the Frankfurt area, the route leads via the A3 or A5 onto the A61, also using the Pfalzfeld exit. Alternatively, the drive along the B9 federal road by the Rhine offers charming views. Although the town center is car-free, parking facilities are available in the immediate vicinity, including parking lots at the harbor and along Heerstraße. Harbor parking is free of charge, especially during the winter season.

Train

Sankt Goar station is centrally located in the town and is an ideal starting point for your cruise. Regular train connections by Süwex and vlexx from Frankfurt am Main allow for a direct and relaxed journey by rail. For example, the travel time from Frankfurt Main Station is only about 1 hour and 14 minutes.

The nearest major airport is Frankfurt am Main (FRA), approximately 62 kilometers away. From there, you can easily reach Sankt Goar station by direct train in about 1 hour and 14 minutes. For an even more individual journey, private transfer services are available, which take you to Sankt Goar in about 1 hour and 22 minutes. Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) is also nearby (approx. 39 to 66 km), but the transfer time by public transport is significantly longer at around 2 hours and 28 minutes. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
