Sankt Goar, nestled in the picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, is a popular stop for river cruises and is easily accessible from the DACH region thanks to its central location. The ship piers are located directly on the banks of the Rhine and are easily accessible from the town center, with the KD pier also being barrier-free.

Car

Arrival by car is convenient via the A61 motorway. Coming from the direction of Cologne, take the Pfalzfeld exit, from where Sankt Goar is reached in about 10 minutes via the B9. From the Frankfurt area, the route leads via the A3 or A5 onto the A61, also using the Pfalzfeld exit. Alternatively, the drive along the B9 federal road by the Rhine offers charming views. Although the town center is car-free, parking facilities are available in the immediate vicinity, including parking lots at the harbor and along Heerstraße. Harbor parking is free of charge, especially during the winter season.

Train

Sankt Goar station is centrally located in the town and is an ideal starting point for your cruise. From here, you can reach the ship piers as well as numerous hotels and guesthouses in just a few minutes on foot. Regular train connections by Süwex and vlexx from Frankfurt am Main allow for a direct and relaxed journey by rail. For example, the travel time from Frankfurt Main Station is only about 1 hour and 14 minutes.

Airplane

The nearest major airport is Frankfurt am Main (FRA), approximately 62 kilometers away. From there, you can easily reach Sankt Goar station by direct train in about 1 hour and 14 minutes. For an even more individual journey, private transfer services are available, which take you to Sankt Goar in about 1 hour and 22 minutes. Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) is also nearby (approx. 39 to 66 km), but the transfer time by public transport is significantly longer at around 2 hours and 28 minutes. For a longer journey by plane, we recommend staying overnight in Sankt Goar the day before to start your river cruise relaxed.

For a comfortable ascent to the imposing Burg Rheinfels, the Burgexpress is at your service. This charming shuttle train starts regularly at the marketplace and near the landings, taking you comfortably up to the fortress complex.

Loreley Ferry

The passenger ferry connects Sankt Goar directly with its sister town Sankt Goarshausen on the opposite side of the Rhein. The crossing takes only a few minutes and, thanks to the frequent service, is an ideal way to visit the Loreley amphitheater or the visitor center.

Burg Rheinfels

The historic Burg Rheinfels towers impressively over Sankt Goar and is easily accessible from the boat landing stage in about fifteen minutes on foot or quite relaxed with the regular Rheinfels shuttle. As the largest fortress ruin on the Middle Rhine, it offers fascinating insights into medieval defensive architecture and also opens up a spectacular panoramic view of the legendary Loreley plateau. Thanks to the extensive grounds with its accessible mine tunnels and the inviting panorama terrace of the adjacent castle hotel, you can enjoy an ideal combination of exploration and indulgence with regional specialties here. It is best to visit the castle directly at opening time in the morning to experience the spacious setting in peace, and plan your walk back to the harbor for a relaxed conclusion about sixty minutes before your ship departs.

Returning to the ship

The way back to the docking points in Sankt Goar is very straightforward thanks to the central location of the piers directly on the Rhine promenade. When planning excursions in the surrounding area, allow for a small time buffer to enjoy the view of the Rhine Valley.

On Foot

Most river cruise ships are docked directly at the Heerstraße and can be reached from the pedestrian zone and the market square in just a few minutes. The path is level along the riverside promenade and, thanks to clear sightlines, offers easy orientation directly back to your ship.

St. Goarer Schloß-Express

For the return journey from Rheinfels Castle, the Schloß-Express is available, a charming trackless train that runs regularly between the castle and the market square in the center. This connection is particularly comfortable and brings you back safely and without effort to the immediate vicinity of the piers.

Taxi and Public Transport
