Port information & tips for Gernsheim
The Hessian Schöfferstadt Gernsheim welcomes its guests as an idyllic gateway to the Ried region, directly on the banks of the majestic Rhine. The town charms visitors with an inviting blend of historical significance and relaxed river flair, which is particularly palpable along the extensive Rhine promenade. Cultural highlights include the impressive Peter Schöffer Monument in honor of the famous printing pioneer, as well as the historic town hall and the baroque pilgrimage church of Maria Einsiedel. River cruise ships dock at the central Gernsheim passenger ship pier, which is located in direct proximity to the town center. Thanks to this prime location, travelers can comfortably reach the charming town center and its main attractions within just a few minutes' walk via the picturesque waterfront street, while simultaneously enjoying the wide view across the Rhine.
Gernsheim is a charming port of call for river cruises on the Rhine and, thanks to its central location in Hesse, is well connected to regional and national transport networks. The small port blends harmoniously into the town center and is easy to reach.
Car
The port of Gernsheim is optimally connected via the A67 motorway as well as the B44 and B426 federal highways. Travelers from the DACH region reach the A67 via the Viernheimer Dreieck in the direction of Frankfurt/Köln/Hannover and take the Gernsheim exit (No. 8). From there, follow the signs towards "Fähre/Hafen" via the L3112, B44, and B426. Parking spaces are available in the immediate vicinity of the port and at the nearby Gernsheim train station.
Train
Gernsheim train station is a relevant arrival point for river cruise passengers and is located only about 200 meters from the town center. It is part of the Mannheim-Frankfurt railway line, also known as the Riedbahn, and offers direct connections with the regional express line RE70 to Frankfurt Central Station (Frankfurt (Main) Hbf) and Mannheim Central Station (Mannheim Hbf). From the station, the short distance to the cruise terminal can easily be covered on foot or by a local taxi.
Airplane
For a convenient arrival from more distant regions, Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is the first choice, located only around 47 kilometers from Gernsheim. The transfer time by taxi or a pre-booked shuttle service is around 45 minutes, depending on traffic conditions, often at fixed prices. Numerous providers offer comfortable rides directly from the airport to the ship. Traveling by public transport from the airport to Gernsheim train station is also possible and takes around 44 minutes, including transfers. For a relaxed embarkation, especially after longer flights, arriving the day before is recommended.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
