Emden is the charming gateway to the North Sea and welcomes travelers with genuine East Frisian hospitality and a unique maritime flair directly at the mouth of the Ems. The traditional seaport city impresses with its picturesque canals, typical brick architecture, and direct access to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the humorous "Dat Otto Huus," the internationally renowned Kunsthalle Emden, and the historic Ratsdelft with its fascinating museum ships. The Emden cruise port, located at the mouth of the Ems, is Germany's westernmost North Sea port and serves as a versatile seaport. Although primarily known as a major hub for vehicles and goods, the outer harbor also serves as an important pier for passengers, particularly for ferry connections to the East Frisian Islands, making it relevant for smaller cruise ships or river cruises as well. The terminal is centrally located and easily accessible.
Car
Emden is excellently connected to the German motorway network. The A31 motorway, known as the Emslandautobahn, leads directly from the Ruhr area to Emden-West. To travel to the port, it is best to use the exits in Emden. On-site, various parking options are available in the immediate vicinity of the Emden-Außenhafen pier, such as the spacious Inselparkplatz operated by AG Ems or Micky's Inselparkplatz, which offer both guarded outdoor spaces and covered options. Arriving early will allow you to start your cruise in a relaxed manner.

An environmentally friendly and comfortable arrival is possible thanks to good rail connections. The Emden Außenhafen station is located directly at the ferry pier, ensuring a seamless transition to the ship. Emden Hauptbahnhof (Hbf) is a hub for IC connections from various German cities such as Cologne, Münster, Bremen, and Hanover. From Emden Hauptbahnhof, you can easily reach the outer harbor in about 7 minutes by train or by taxi in approximately 4 minutes. Please note current travel information from Deutsche Bahn, as bridge work from July 18 to August 7, 2026, inclusive, may lead to changes in rail traffic, and rail replacement bus services will be established between Leer and Emden.
Airplane
For international guests or those traveling a longer distance from the DACH region, Bremen Airport (BRE) or Hamburg Airport (HAM) are good options. Bremen Airport is approximately 111 to 134 kilometers away and can be reached by car in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. From Hamburg Airport, which is about 187 kilometers away, you will need approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes by car. Numerous transfer services and taxis are available at both airports to take you comfortably to the port of Emden. We recommend staying overnight in a pre-cruise hotel in Emden or in the vicinity of Bremen or Hamburg after a long-haul flight to start your holiday refreshed and relaxed.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
