Port information & tips for Tresco (Isles of Scilly)

Tresco is an idyllic jewel of the Isles of Scilly and captivates with its subtropical flair off the picturesque coast of Cornwall. This car-free private island welcomes visitors with incomparable tranquility, crystal-clear water, and exotic flora that thrives magnificently thanks to the mild Gulf Stream, creating an almost Caribbean atmosphere. Absolute highlights include the world-famous Tresco Abbey Gardens with their impressive variety of plants and the integrated Valhalla Museum, while the historical ruins of Cromwell’s Castle right on the coast also invite exploration. Since Tresco is a tender port, guests arrive by boat directly at New Grimsby Quay, from where the most important sights, fine sandy beaches, and charming local spots are easily accessible within a few minutes' walk.

Getting to the cruise port of Tresco on the Isles of Scilly is a multi-stage journey due to its island location. From Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, the trip first leads to a mainland departure point in Cornwall before the actual crossing to the islands takes place. Cruise ships usually tender off Tresco, meaning there is no direct terminal connection.

Arrival via mainland ferry (Penzance)

For travel to the Isles of Scilly, Penzance in Cornwall is the central departure port for the Scillonian III ferry. From the DACH region, the ideal way to arrive is by plane to London (Heathrow or Gatwick) and from there comfortably by train to Penzance. Alternatively, Penzance is easily accessible by car via the A30, and various long-term parking options such as the Isles of Scilly Parking Service or parking facilities at the harbor are available. Penzance railway station is also just a short walk (about 5-10 minutes) from the ferry terminal, making onward travel extremely convenient.

Arrival by plane to the island of St. Mary's

Another fast option is flying to the Isles of Scilly. Skybus offers flights from Land's End Airport (LEQ), Newquay Airport (NQY), and Exeter Airport (EXT) to St. Mary's Airport (SCI). From the DACH region, it is best to fly to a major British airport such as London Heathrow (LHR) or Gatwick (LGW) and take a connecting flight or a transfer to one of the mentioned departure airports in Cornwall. The flight time from Land's End to St. Mary's is only about 15 to 20 minutes.

Onward travel to Tresco & pre-cruise stay

After arriving on St. Mary's, whether by ferry or plane, onward travel to Tresco is via a short, scenic inter-island ferry connection. Due to the often long journey from the DACH region and to ensure a relaxed start to your cruise, an overnight stay on the day before embarkation is strongly recommended. Hotels in Penzance or on St. Mary's are ideal for this, offering the opportunity to explore the picturesque surroundings in advance.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
