Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, is a unique tidal island off the coast of Northumberland and is not a traditional cruise port for the embarkation of large ships. Accessibility to the island depends crucially on the tides, as a driveable causeway is submerged under water twice a day at high tide, requiring careful planning.
Car
You can easily reach the island of Lindisfarne via the A1 main road, from which you take the Beal exit and follow the signs to Holy Island. The picturesque causeway that connects the island to the mainland is about 8 kilometers long and leads you directly to the center of the island. It is essential to check the tide times before arrival, as the causeway is not passable for several hours at high tide. The main parking lot Chare Ends (postal code TD15 2SE) is available on the island, located directly upon arrival and is subject to a fee; however, overnight parking is not permitted there. For visitors with a blue badge and coaches, there is a separate parking lot on Green Lane (postal code TD15 2SX).
Train
The nearest main train station is Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is easily accessible thanks to good connections to the LNER line on the London King's Cross – Edinburgh route. From there, you can reach the Holy Island Causeway in about 30 minutes by taxi. Alternatively, the local bus line 477 runs from Berwick-upon-Tweed station to the island, although its schedule is heavily dependent on tide times and is therefore irregular, especially in the winter months. It is recommended to book a taxi in advance to ensure a relaxed onward journey and to avoid waiting times at the causeway.
Airplane & Pre-cruise Stay
The nearest international airports are Newcastle (NCL) and Edinburgh (EDI), both of which are approximately 105 kilometers from Holy Island. From Newcastle, for example, you can take the train to Berwick-upon-Tweed and continue to the island, reducing the total travel time to about 1.5 hours (not taking the tides into account). For travelers from the DACH region, an overnight stay on the mainland, for example in Berwick-upon-Tweed or nearby Beal, is strongly recommended due to flight times and the tide-dependent accessibility of the island. This allows for a stress-free arrival and sufficient time to make optimal use of the tides for the crossing to the island.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Accordingly, plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
