Port information & tips for Esztergom
Esztergom is the cradle of Hungary and welcomes travelers as a significant spiritual center directly on the picturesque Danube. The city impresses with its majestic location on the Danube Bend and combines sacred splendor with medieval charm, while the well-maintained riverside promenade invites you to a relaxed first shore excursion. Splendid highlights include the monumental Esztergom Basilica, the historic Castle Hill with the Royal Palace, and the striking Maria-Valeria Bridge. River cruise ships dock at the central Mahart pier on Primas Island, from which the imposing cathedral and the historic center are easily accessible in about ten minutes on foot; additionally, small panoramic trains facilitate the way up to the city's landmark.
The historic city of Esztergom at the Danube Bend is a significant stop for river cruises and, thanks to its proximity to the Hungarian capital, is excellently connected to the European transport network. The docking points are centrally located on the Danube promenade on Prímás-Insel, directly below the widely visible Basilica, allowing for easy orientation upon arrival.
Car
From the direction of Vienna or Southern Germany, the route leads comfortably via the A4 motorway and the Hungarian M1, from which well-maintained country roads such as Route 10 or 11 lead directly into the city center. On-site parking is available on Prímás-Insel in the immediate vicinity of the piers, as well as guarded parking lots at the city's larger hotels, which are ideal for guests arriving by car with a planned overnight stay.
Airplane
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) is approximately 75 kilometers away and is served daily by direct flights from numerous cities in the DACH region. The onward journey to the port in Esztergom is quick via airport transfer or taxi in around 70 to 90 minutes, with the drive through the picturesque Pilis Mountains already offering the first scenic highlights.
Train
Esztergom station is excellently connected to the Hungarian rail network via Budapest-Nyugati station and is served from there at frequent intervals by modern regional trains. From the station, travelers can reach the docking points on the Danube in a short taxi ride of about five minutes or by using local bus connections, which guarantees a relaxed and traffic-free arrival.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
