Port information & tips for St. John
St. John is the unspoiled natural jewel of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is considered one of the most exclusive destinations in the Caribbean. The island captivates with its relaxed atmosphere, as over two-thirds of its area is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, offering a backdrop of dense forests and dreamlike bays. Highlights include the world-famous Trunk Bay with its unique underwater snorkeling trail and the charming Mongoose Junction, known for high-end boutiques and dining in a historic setting. Since larger cruise ships usually anchor offshore, visitors reach the heart of the island via the Cruz Bay Tender Pier. This landing site is located directly in the center of Cruz Bay, making sights and local markets easily accessible thanks to short walking distances.
The idyllic port of Cruz Bay on St. John is primarily visited by smaller boutique ships and yachts due to its exclusive location. Arrival from the DACH region traditionally takes place via the neighboring island of St. Thomas, which begins the vacation with a picturesque ferry crossing through the Caribbean island world.
Airplane
Since St. John has no airport of its own for commercial aircraft, travelers use Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on the neighboring island of St. Thomas. This airport is conveniently served from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with a layover via US hubs such as Miami (MIA), New York (JFK), or via San Juan (SJU) on Puerto Rico.
Ferry & Transfer
From the airport on St. Thomas, you can reach the ferry terminal in Red Hook or alternatively the pier in Charlotte Amalie after an approximately 30- to 45-minute taxi ride. Passenger ferries run regularly and take you directly to the heart of Cruz Bay on St. John in a short crossing of about 20 to 45 minutes, where the terminals are usually within walking distance or reachable after a minimal transfer time.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight time from Europe and the necessary ferry passage, arriving at least one day before embarkation is highly recommended. A stay in one of the resorts in Cruz Bay or directly on St. Thomas allows for a relaxed start to the cruise and also offers the opportunity to explore the famous Trunk Bay or the Virgin Islands National Park in peace beforehand.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
