Port information & tips for Port of Spain
Port of Spain is the vibrant capital of Trinidad and Tobago and stands out as a cultural powerhouse of the southern Caribbean. The city welcomes visitors with a fascinating blend of a modern skyline, colonial heritage, and the thrilling rhythm of local steelpans. Highlights such as the bustling Independence Square with the Brian Lara Promenade, as well as the history-rich National Museum and Art Gallery, are located in the immediate vicinity and invite cultural discoveries. In addition, the Queen’s Park Savannah with the architecturally impressive "Magnificent Seven" provides a picturesque backdrop. Cruise ships dock at the central Cruise Ship Complex, which is located directly on the edge of the business district. Thanks to this prime location, guests can easily reach the heart of the city and a wide range of shopping opportunities within a few minutes' walk.
The Port of Spain, the largest port in Trinidad and Tobago, is a popular port of call for Caribbean cruises. For guests from the DACH region, arrival is primarily organized by plane, with an early arrival recommended due to the long-haul flights.
Airplane
Piarco International Airport (POS) is the nearest international airport and is located about 25 to 30 kilometers east of Port of Spain. Direct flights from the DACH region to Trinidad and Tobago are not common; travelers usually reach POS with a layover in North America or Europe.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Piarco International Airport (POS) you can easily reach the cruise port by taxi, the ride takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Private transfer services can also be booked in advance to ensure a smooth journey to the terminal. Cruise lines often offer their own transfer options, which you can add during your booking.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey and the time difference, we recommend staying overnight in a pre-cruise hotel in Port of Spain or near Piarco Airport. This allows for a relaxed start to your vacation and gives you time to acclimate to the tropical climate before embarking on your cruise. Many hotels in Port of Spain offer a good starting point to explore the city.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
