Port information & tips for Charlestown
Charlestown is the picturesque capital of the island of Nevis and delights with a relaxed, authentic atmosphere and magnificent Georgian colonial architecture. Its location at the foot of the imposing Nevis Peak provides an impressive backdrop and invites exploration. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the Museum of Nevis History in the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton and the historic Bath Thermal Springs, known for their healing properties. Cruise ships dock at the central Charlestown Pier, which is located directly in the heart of the town. Thanks to this first-class connection, the charming alleys, local markets, and sights can be easily explored on foot within a few minutes.
Charlestown on Nevis is a picturesque cruise port of call, known for its charming Georgian architecture and relaxed atmosphere. For international guests from the DACH region, arrival usually takes place via the larger neighboring island of St. Kitts, as Charlestown is primarily a tender port where cruise ships anchor offshore and passengers are brought ashore by tender boats.
Airplane
The primary international destination airport for the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) on St. Kitts. Direct flights from the DACH region generally do not exist; instead, convenient connections via major hubs such as San Juan (Puerto Rico), Antigua, or St. Maarten are common. Alternatively, the smaller Vance W. Amory International Airport (NEV) on Nevis offers regional connections and is located only about 10 to 15 minutes by car from Charlestown.
Transfer to Nevis
After arriving at the international airport SKB on St. Kitts, the journey to Charlestown on Nevis continues via island transfer. For this, take a taxi to the ferry terminal in Basseterre or Major's Bay. From there, regular passenger ferries run directly to Charlestown, with the scenic crossing taking about 25 to 45 minutes. A faster alternative is water taxis, which reach Oualie Beach on Nevis in 10 to 15 minutes, for example from Cockleshell Beach on St. Kitts. The total transfer time from SKB to Charlestown is approximately 45 minutes to over an hour, depending on the connection.
Pre-Cruise Stay on Nevis
Especially with longer intercontinental flights and the necessary island transfer, a pre-cruise stay on Nevis or St. Kitts is highly recommended to start your Caribbean experience in a relaxed way. Numerous hotels and resorts, including luxury options like the Four Seasons Resort Nevis, are located in and around Charlestown or along Pinney's Beach and provide an ideal base for acclimatization and initial exploration of the island before your cruise ship arrives.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Accordingly, plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
