Port information & tips for Roadtown (Tortola)
Road Town is the charming capital of the British Virgin Islands and the gateway to the tropical paradise of Tortola. Nestled in a picturesque bay, the city impresses with its relaxed Caribbean flair, rolling green hills, and the crystal-clear waters of the Sir Francis Drake Channel. On-site highlights such as the idyllic J.R. O’Neal Botanic Garden, the historic Old Government House Museum, and the colorful Main Street invite exploration. Cruise ships dock at the modern Tortola Cruise Pier, which directly adjoins the spacious Tortola Pier Park and, thanks to its central location, provides direct and comfortable access to the sights as well as the numerous boutiques and restaurants of the city center.
Road Town on Tortola is the central hub for cruises in the British Virgin Islands and welcomes its guests at the modern Tortola Pier Park right in the heart of the capital. The journey for guests from the DACH region usually takes place via international hubs in the Caribbean and, thanks to short transfer distances or a picturesque ferry crossing, becomes the first highlight of the trip.
Airplane
The Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) on Beef Island is located about 11 kilometers east of the cruise terminal and is directly connected to Tortola via the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge. Since there are no direct connections from Europe, travelers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland mostly use connections via San Juan (SJU) or Antigua (ANU), from where small regional aircraft reach the island airport in around 30 to 45 minutes and taxis take you to the ship in about 15 minutes.
Ferry
Many international guests alternatively fly to Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on the neighboring island of St. Thomas, as it is served more frequently by major airlines. From there, you can reach the ferry terminal in Road Town in about 60 minutes via the fast ferries from Road Town Fast Ferry or Smith's Ferry, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the cruise pier and allows for a convenient arrival.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey and the time difference, an overnight stay before embarkation is highly recommended to start the cruise well-rested. Hotels in Road Town or at the nearby Cane Garden Bay offer an ideal starting point and make it possible to reach the check-in at Tortola Pier Park directly on the morning of departure with a short taxi transfer in about 10 to 15 minutes.
