Port information & tips for Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik, Baffin Island)

Pond Inlet, called Mittimatalik in Inuktitut, is a fascinating destination in the far north of the Canadian Arctic at the northern tip of Baffin Island. Its majestic location on Eclipse Sound offers a breathtaking backdrop of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and deep blue icy seas. Special highlights include the informative Nattinnak Visitor Centre with its cultural treasures, the impressive view of Sirmilik National Park, and authentic encounters with local Inuit art. Cruise ships anchor in the protected bay and bring guests directly to the central community pier by Zodiac. From this landing point, the picturesque town center is within easy reach in just a few minutes on foot thanks to the compact settlement structure.

Pond Inlet on Baffin Island is an extremely remote cruise port that is only accessible by air and sea. There are no traditional port facilities; embarkation usually takes place via Zodiac tender from the expedition ships.

Airplane

Pond Inlet Airport (YIO) is the nearest airport and the primary arrival option for guests from the DACH region. There are no direct flights from Europe; instead, connections are usually made via major Canadian cities such as Montreal (YUL) or Ottawa (YOW) to Iqaluit (YFB) and from there with domestic flights, mostly with Canadian North, to Pond Inlet. The flight time from Iqaluit to Pond Inlet is approximately 2 hours and 44 minutes.

Transfer & Shuttle

Pond Inlet Airport (YIO) is very conveniently located, only about 0.5 to 1.6 kilometers from the town center. The transfer to your accommodation or the embarkation point is therefore very short and takes only a few minutes, often by taxi or local shuttles. In the town itself, there is also an on-demand bus service for short distances.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long journey and the remote location with potential weather-related flight delays in the Arctic, a pre-cruise overnight stay is strongly recommended. Hotels such as the Sauniq Hotel or the Black Point Lodge in Pond Inlet provide a comfortable base before your cruise. Alternatively, you can also plan a night in Iqaluit, the main hub for flights to Pond Inlet, to arrive for your onward flight relaxed and on time.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the latest announcements and the notices on board, as berthing and departure times can change at short notice.
