Essential sights in the immediate vicinity include the neo-Gothic Penrhyn Castle with its impressive architecture, the historic Bangor Cathedral, and the magnificent Garth Pier, which is one of the longest in Wales. Cruise ships use the historic Garth Pier as a docking point, from which the city center is easily accessible via an approximately 15-minute walk along the coast, offering wide views of the island of Anglesey and the deep blue sea.
Bangor in Wales is a charming destination on the Menai Strait and primarily serves as a port of call for cruises, but it can also be a starting point for smaller ships. Thanks to good transport links, the city is easily accessible from the United Kingdom and thus also for guests from the DACH region. There is no specific, large cruise terminal; embarkation usually takes place at Port Penrhyn, which is located about two kilometers from the city center.
Car
Traveling to Bangor is very convenient thanks to the excellent connection via the A55 (North Wales Expressway), which in turn provides connections to the M56 and M6 motorways. Travelers from southern England use the M54 towards Shrewsbury, Wrexham, and Chester before joining the A55, while guests coming from the north reach Bangor directly via the M56 and then the A55. Parking is available at Garth Road Car Park (LL57 2SF), which offers day parking for approximately £6. In addition, Garth Pier Parking allows for overnight stays for £20, which is advantageous for arriving the day before or for longer stays.
Airplane
For international guests from the DACH region, Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL) and Manchester Airport (MAN) are the closest airports. Both are about 1.5 to 2 hours' drive from Bangor and are approximately 145 kilometers (90 miles) away. From Manchester Airport, there are hourly train connections to Bangor with a travel time of about 2 hours and 43 minutes. There are also direct train connections to Bangor from Liverpool Lime Street Station. For a relaxed arrival, we recommend a flight the day before to arrive in Bangor well-rested and on time.
Train
Bangor has a well-connected train station offering direct train services from major cities such as London Euston (approx. 3 hours), Manchester, Crewe, and Cardiff. From Bangor station, you can easily reach Port Penrhyn, where cruise ships dock, by taxi in about 10 minutes. Alternatively, Garth Pier, located near the port, is also accessible on foot via well-maintained paths, allowing for a picturesque walk along the coast.
