Airplane & Transfer
The nearest airport is Stornoway Airport (SYY) on the Isle of Lewis, located about 5 kilometers east of the city center. Regular flight connections exist from the major Scottish hubs of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Inverness. Taxis are available for transfers from the airport to the city center or the ferry terminal, covering the distance in about five to ten minutes for approximately 10 to 15 pounds. It is recommended to book taxis in advance to ensure a smooth process. Alternatively, the W5 bus line connects the airport with the city center in about 9 to 15 minutes, with buses running every two hours from Monday to Saturday.
Ferry (as a connection to the archipelago)
Since the Shiant Islands are only accessible by boat, traveling to Stornoway is often an essential step. From Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, this is typically done through a combination of flight and ferry. Caledonian MacBrayne ferries operate from Ullapool on the Scottish mainland to Stornoway. The crossing takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours. Ullapool itself is easily accessible from Inverness by bus (Line 961, approx. 1 hour 20 minutes travel time), with bus schedules often coordinated with ferry times. At the Stornoway ferry terminal, free short-term parking spaces and a public long-term parking lot (120 spaces) are available just a one-minute walk away.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the remote location and sometimes long journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay in Stornoway before the planned boat tour to the Shiant Islands is recommended. This allows for a relaxed arrival and provides buffer time for possible travel delays. In Stornoway, you will find numerous hotels and accommodations that guarantee a comfortable start to your Hebridean adventure. Many hotels are centrally located, so the harbor and other local amenities are easily accessible on foot or with a short taxi transfer.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation.
