Portree is the picturesque main town of the Isle of Skye and is considered one of the most fascinating destinations in the Scottish Highlands. The idyllic harbor town impresses with its sheltered location in a deep blue bay and the iconic maritime flair of the famous, brightly painted row of houses directly on the water. Special highlights in the immediate vicinity include the historic viewpoint "The Lump" with its striking Apothecary’s Tower, as well as the charming art galleries and local boutiques around central Somerled Square. Since Portree is a classic tender port, guests reach the mainland comfortably by boat at the central Portree Pier, which is located directly in the heart of the town and, thanks to this prime location, offers direct access to all sights.
The cruise port of Portree on the picturesque Isle of Skye is a classic tender port. Cruise ships anchor in the sheltered bay, from where passengers can comfortably reach the new harbor pier at the quay by tender boat. From there, you can reach the charming town center with its colorful houses directly on foot after a short walk. Given the longer travel times to the island, a pre-cruise overnight stay in Scotland or on Skye is highly recommended to start your cruise experience relaxed.
Car
The Isle of Skye is connected to the Scottish mainland free of charge via the Skye Bridge, which allows for a flexible journey by your own car or rental car. From Edinburgh, you can reach Portree via the A87 in about 5 hours (approx. 380 km), from Glasgow in 5 to 6 hours (approx. 347 km), and from Inverness in around 2.5 to 3.5 hours (approx. 180 km). In Portree itself, you will find parking options, including at the central Somerled Square. Please note that some public parking lots have time restrictions for overnight stays. Local rental car providers in Portree and Armadale also offer the opportunity to be mobile directly on the island.
Airplane & Transfer
For guests from the DACH region, the international airports of Edinburgh (EDI) and Glasgow (GLA) serve as the primary points of arrival. Alternatively, Inverness Airport (INV) is the closest regional airport to the Isle of Skye. From Edinburgh or Glasgow, the onward journey to Portree by bus with a transfer takes about 7 to 8 hours, while a direct drive by car takes around 4.5 to 6 hours. From Inverness Airport, you can reach Portree by bus in about 4.5 hours or by car in approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Numerous taxi companies also offer comfortable direct transfers from all three airports to Portree.
Train & Bus
The Isle of Skye does not have its own train station. The nearest train stations on the mainland are Kyle of Lochalsh (with train connections from Inverness via the scenic Kyle Line) and Mallaig (reachable from Glasgow via the West Highland Line). From Kyle of Lochalsh, there are bus and taxi connections to Portree. From Mallaig, a ferry takes you to Armadale on Skye, from where you continue to Portree by taxi or limited local bus services. Another convenient option is the direct journey with Citylink long-distance buses, which run several times daily from Glasgow and Inverness to Portree.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
