Most cruise ships anchor off the island and bring their passengers ashore by tender boats, usually to the charming main town of Tobermory, while smaller ships can also dock there directly.
Airplane
The nearest international airports are Glasgow (GLA) and Edinburgh (EDI). From Glasgow Airport (GLA), you can easily reach Oban by direct bus in about 2 hours 25 minutes or by car in around 1 hour 49 minutes for the approximately 143 kilometers. From Edinburgh Airport (EDI), the bus journey to Oban takes about 3 hours 18 minutes and the car journey around 2 hours 21 minutes for the approximately 187 to 193 kilometers. Given the long journey from the DACH region, an overnight stay on the Scottish mainland before continuing to Oban is recommended to start your cruise adventure relaxed.
Train
Oban railway station is conveniently located right next to the ferry terminal, allowing for a seamless transition. Direct ScotRail connections exist from Glasgow Queen Street, taking you to Oban in around 3 hours. The route along the West Highland Line is also considered one of the most beautiful railway routes in the world and offers picturesque views. From Edinburgh, Oban is reachable by train in about 4 hours 15 minutes, usually with a change in Glasgow.
Car
Oban is accessible via well-maintained roads; for example, you can drive from Glasgow in about 2.5 hours and from Edinburgh in around 3 hours. Various parking options are available in Oban, including short and long-term parking near the ferry terminal, such as at the Oban Station Car Park for about 12 GBP per 12 hours or 24 GBP per 24 hours, as well as other Pay & Display car parks (e.g., North Pier, Corran Halls, Tweeddale Street, Albany Street). It is strongly recommended to book ferry tickets for vehicles to Mull (Oban-Craignure route) in advance, especially during high season, as capacity is limited. The ferry crossing from Oban to Craignure on Mull takes about 50 to 55 minutes.
