Fort William is picturesquely situated on the shores of the deep blue Loch Linnhe and is considered the spectacular gateway to the Scottish Highlands. The charming town impresses with its location at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Great Britain, and offers a perfect blend of rugged nature and historical flair. Outstanding attractions in the immediate vicinity include the informative West Highland Museum, the historic ruins of Old Inverlochy Castle, and the impressive Neptune’s Staircase lock flight. As cruise ships anchor in the bay, guests reach the center comfortably by tender boat at Fort William Town Pier. Thanks to this central location, the lively High Street and all local attractions are reachable within just a few minutes' walk.
Fort William in the Scottish Highlands welcomes cruise guests in a breathtaking natural setting at the foot of Ben Nevis and on the shores of Loch Linnhe. Car
Fort William is excellently accessible via the picturesque A82, which leads from Glasgow in the south through the impressive landscape of Glencoe and continues to Inverness. In addition, the A830, known as the "Road to the Isles", connects Fort William with the coastal town of Mallaig and its ferry connections. Parking is available at the West End Car Park near the pontoons as well as other paid short-term and long-term parking lots in the city area.
Train
Fort William railway station is centrally located in the city, only about 10 to 15 minutes' walk from the tender boat landing stage. Thanks to daily connections with ScotRail from Glasgow Queen Street as well as the famous Caledonian Sleeper from London Euston, the journey is particularly comfortable and scenic. Taxis are available at the station for short trips.
Airplane & Transfer
For international guests, Glasgow International (GLA), Edinburgh (EDI), and Inverness (INV) airports are the most relevant arrival points. Inverness (INV) is the nearest airport at around 110 kilometers, while Glasgow (GLA) is about 160 kilometers and Edinburgh (EDI) around 200 kilometers away. Direct bus connections (e.g. with Ember or Scottish Citylink) from Glasgow and Edinburgh offer a convenient onward journey, with travel times of approximately 2 hours 40 minutes from Glasgow and 3 hours 31 minutes from Edinburgh. Private transfer services are also available, although arriving the day before departure is advisable due to the longer transfer times and for relaxation.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
