Port information & tips for Kinsale

Kinsale is considered the picturesque "gourmet capital" of Ireland and enchants visitors as one of the most charming destinations on the southwest coast. Its idyllic location on the banks of the River Bandon creates a maritime atmosphere, inviting extensive exploration thanks to the brightly painted rows of houses and winding alleys. Cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity include the impressive, star-shaped Charles Fort and the historic Desmond Castle, both of which offer deep insights into Irish history. Cruise ships usually anchor in the sheltered Kinsale Harbour, from where passengers reach the centrally located Kinsale Town Pier by tender boat. This landing stage is located right in the heart of the town and provides convenient access to world-class restaurants and local art galleries.

Kinsale, a picturesque harbor town on the south coast of Ireland, is easily accessible for cruise guests thanks to its good connections to roads and the nearest airport, Cork. As a smaller port, Kinsale offers berths for yachts and smaller ships, with the town itself standing out as a charming destination.

Car

The journey to Kinsale is convenient via Ireland's road network. From Cork City, take the N27 towards Cork Airport and then follow the R600 directly to Kinsale. The drive from Cork takes about 30 minutes. Travelers from the DACH region who land at Dublin Airport (DUB) reach Kinsale via the M50, N7, M7, and M8 motorways towards Cork, followed by the R600. This longer drive takes around 3 to 4 hours. In Kinsale, both paid parking lots such as the Kinsale Harbour Car Park and the Kinsale Town Centre Car Park are available, as well as free options on the outskirts, which allow for a pleasant 10-minute walk to the harbor.

Train

Since Kinsale itself does not have a train station, the nearest relevant station is Cork Kent Station in Cork City. From there, you can easily reach Kinsale with the Bus Éireann Route 226. These buses run hourly and take you to Kinsale town center in about 45 to 55 minutes. The bus stop in Kinsale is centrally located at the main parking lot, not far from the tourist office. Alternatively, a taxi from the station covers the distance in approximately 28 minutes.

Airplane

Cork Airport (ORK) is the closest airport to Kinsale and is located only about 20 kilometers (13 miles) north of the town. The journey by car or taxi takes just 20 to 25 minutes. A direct bus connection with Bus Éireann Route 226 takes you from Cork Airport to Kinsale every hour, with a travel time of only about 26 minutes and costs ranging from 4 to 7 euros. Taxis are available directly at the airport arrival area and cost between 30 and 50 euros. For a relaxed arrival, especially for international flights from the DACH region via Dublin, an overnight stay in Cork or Kinsale the day before your embarkation is recommended.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time – depending on the cruise line and destination area – is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the trip: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
