Port information & tips for Killybegs (Donegal)
Killybegs is Ireland's most important fishing port and a true jewel on the wildly romantic west coast of County Donegal. The charming town welcomes visitors with an authentic maritime atmosphere and, thanks to its location on the Wild Atlantic Way, offers a spectacular backdrop of rugged coastlines and deep blue sea. Absolute highlights include the Killybegs Maritime & Heritage Centre as well as the majestic Slieve League Cliffs, which are among the highest sea cliffs in Europe and guarantee breathtaking panoramic views. Cruise ships dock at the modern Smooth Point Pier, which is conveniently located near the town center, allowing travelers to explore the center with its traditional pubs and shops in about 15 minutes on foot.
Killybegs, Ireland's largest fishing port, offers an authentic Irish atmosphere and is easily accessible thanks to good road connections and the nearby airport. Cruise ships dock at Smooth Point Pier, a modern deep-water pier located approximately 1 to 1.5 kilometers from the city center. While there is no traditional terminal building, cruise lines often provide shuttles into town.
Airplane
For guests from the DACH region, traveling by plane is the most common method. The nearest airport is Donegal Airport (CFN), approximately 57 to 67 kilometers away, which corresponds to a driving time of around one hour. Rental cars are available here, and taxis cost about 95 to 120 Euro. Alternatively, Dublin Airport (DUB) offers a larger selection of direct flights from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. From Dublin, you can reach Killybegs in about 3 hours and 15 minutes to 4 hours by rental car via the M1/N15 or N15/N4/N61/N56. For a relaxed arrival, an overnight stay before embarkation is recommended due to the long flight time.
Auto
Arriving with your own vehicle or a rental car allows you to flexibly explore the picturesque Donegal region. Killybegs is excellently connected to the Irish road network via the N56. From the direction of Dublin, take the M1, N2, and N15 and continue on the N56 to Killybegs. Free parking is available directly in the town, for example near the Ahoy Café or along Shore Road, not far from the Tara Hotel. Special Park & Cruise offers are not common in Killybegs, but free long-term parking in the village is easily possible.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
To start your cruise experience well-rested and enjoy Irish hospitality in advance, an overnight stay in one of the charming hotels in Killybegs is recommended. Many accommodations are located just a short walk (about 10 minutes) from the pier. The Bay View Hotel or the Tara Hotel are popular options and provide a convenient base for exploring the town before your embarkation.
