Sfântu Gheorghe in the Danube Delta is a unique destination that is accessible exclusively by water. The city of Tulcea serves as the most important gateway to the Delta, from where onward travel takes place by boat. The mooring point for cruise ships in Sfântu Gheorghe does not offer a developed terminal infrastructure, as the ships dock directly in the charming fishing village.
Airplane
For arrival from the DACH region, Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) in Bucharest is the most significant international destination airport. From there, you can reach Tulcea, the gateway to the Danube Delta, after a drive of around three to four hours by rental car, bus, or organized transfer. Another option is Constanța Airport (CND), which also offers international connections and is located about 130 to 150 kilometers from Tulcea. Given the further journey into the Delta, an overnight stay in Bucharest or Tulcea before embarkation is recommended.
Auto
Travel by car to Tulcea is straightforward, especially if you drive via Bucharest. Once in Tulcea, there are spacious parking facilities directly at the harbor where you can leave your vehicle for the duration of your cruise. In addition, there are private parking and shuttle providers in the region, such as "Parking-Delta" in Nufăru, about 12 kilometers from Tulcea, which offer comprehensive services for cars and boats. Please note that Sfântu Gheorghe itself is car-free and can only be reached by boat.
Transfer per Boat
The idyllic village of Sfântu Gheorghe is accessible exclusively by waterway. Your journey typically takes you from Tulcea, or alternatively from Murighiol or Mahmudia, with a regular boat transfer to the cruise ship. The crossing from Tulcea to Sfântu Gheorghe takes about 2.5 hours and is an initial highlight, as it allows you to immerse yourself deeply in the fascinating landscape of the Danube Delta. For a relaxed start to your Delta adventure, a pre-cruise hotel in Tulcea is recommended to begin the boat passage well-rested.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that with your travel documents, you will typically receive a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the shipping company and destination area - is generally scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
