Port information & tips for Kemi
Kemi is the fascinating arctic gateway to Finnish Lapland and is picturesquely located at the northernmost tip of the Gulf of Bothnia. The charming port city delights visitors with its untouched nature, warm Nordic hospitality, and the unique flair of the Finnish sea. Splendid highlights include the impressive SnowExperience365 in the famous SnowCastle area, the legendary icebreaker Sampo, and the Kemi Gemstone Gallery with its precious exhibits. Cruise ships dock at the port of Ajos, which is located about ten kilometers south of the city center. Thanks to the shuttle buses provided, guests can reach the city center comfortably in about 15 minutes while enjoying a relaxed drive through the idyllic coastal landscape.
The port of Kemi in Finland is excellently accessible, especially for travelers from the DACH region, by plane, supplemented by convenient transfers or the train. Since Kemi is a smaller port, the structure is clear, and the focus is on a relaxed arrival to the ships.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Kemi-Tornio Airport (KEM), located only about 6 to 7 kilometers from the port of Kemi, allowing for a quick journey. There are no direct flights from the DACH region; however, Kemi-Tornio is easily reachable via Helsinki (HEL) with Finnair. The flight time from Helsinki to Kemi is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. For the short distance from the airport to the port, taxis are available to take you directly to the terminal in about 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, some cruise lines and hotels offer transfers.
Train
Kemi railway station is well-connected to the Finnish rail network and is located relatively close to the center and the port. There are regular train connections from Helsinki, with the journey taking about 7 to 9 hours, often with a change. From Kemi station, you can easily reach the port by taxi in a few minutes or, depending on the ship's location, also on foot.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Given the arrival with a connection in Helsinki and Kemi's northern location, an overnight stay in Kemi on the day before embarkation is recommended. This allows for a relaxed start to the cruise without time pressure. In Kemi itself, you will find charming hotels from which the port can be easily reached on embarkation day.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
