Car & Ferry
Traveling by car from the DACH region first leads you to one of the ferry ports on the Danish mainland. A common route is via the German A7 motorway towards Flensburg and then continuing on Danish country roads (e.g., Road 8) to the ferry port of Fynshav on Als. From Fynshav, the electric ferry "Ellen" sails to Søby on Ærø, with a crossing time of about 60 minutes. Alternatively, you can head for Svendborg on Funen, from where a ferry takes you directly to Ærøskøbing in approximately 75 minutes. It is strongly recommended to reserve ferry spots for vehicles in advance online, especially during the high season. Parking in Ærøskøbing is often free, though time restrictions should be observed. Parking is also available at the mainland ferry ports like Fynshav, should you wish to leave your car on the mainland.
Train & Ferry
For rail travelers from the DACH region, traveling to Svendborg on Funen is ideal. Svendborg is well-connected to the Danish rail network via Odense. From Svendborg station, it is only about a 5-minute walk to the ferry port, from where the ferry takes you directly to Ærøskøbing in around 70-75 minutes. After arriving in Ærøskøbing, you can easily explore the island using the free bus network.
Airplane & Ferry
The nearest airport to Ærøskøbing is Sønderborg (SGD), approximately 40.7 km away, but it offers only limited direct connections from the DACH region. A better option is Billund Airport (BLL), located about 124.4 km away, which offers good bus and train connections to Svendborg (travel time approx. 2 hours 55 minutes by bus). Alternatively, Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is an option, from where the journey continues by train to Svendborg (approx. 3 hours) and then by ferry to Ærøskøbing. From Odense Airport (ODE), which serves regional flights, Svendborg is reachable in about 50 minutes by transfer. From there, the journey also continues by ferry to Ærøskøbing. It is recommended to plan your arrival early and potentially schedule an overnight stay on Funen to reach the ferry connections in a relaxed manner.
