Port information & tips for Ko Phi Phi Islands
Ko Phi Phi is a tropical paradise in the Thai Andaman Sea and is one of the most spectacular destinations in Southeast Asia. The archipelago impresses with its dramatic limestone cliffs that rise majestically from the emerald green water, while offering a vibrant mix of relaxed island flair and pulsating life. Highlights include the breathtaking Phi Phi Viewpoint with its panoramic views, as well as boat trips to the world-famous Maya Bay and the fine sandy Monkey Beach. Since large cruise ships usually lie at anchor off the coast, guests are safely transported by tender boat to Tonsai Pier, which is located directly in the heart of Tonsai Village and provides immediate access to cafes, boutiques, and dreamlike beaches.
The Ko Phi Phi Islands, a breathtaking archipelago in the Andaman Sea, are accessible exclusively by sea. A traditional cruise port with direct connections for cars or trains does not exist; instead, arrival is via ferry and speedboat connections from the nearest mainland ports or islands.
Airplane
The nearest international airports are Phuket International Airport (HKT) and Krabi International Airport (KBV). Both airports are reached from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with transfers and serve as important hubs for onward travel to the Ko Phi Phi Islands. From Phuket, it is approximately 42 km to Rassada Pier, the main ferry port for connections to Ko Phi Phi. From Krabi, it is approximately 15 km to Klong Jilard Pier or Krabi Town Pier. Taxis and minibuses are available at both airports for transfers to the ferry piers.
Ferry & Speedboat
The primary way to reach the Ko Phi Phi Islands is by ferry or speedboat from Phuket or Krabi. From Phuket, ferries mainly depart from Rassada Pier and reach Tonsai Pier on Ko Phi Phi Don in about 1.5 to 2 hours. From Krabi, ferries and speedboats operate from Klong Jilard Pier or Krabi Town Pier, with the crossing taking 1 to 2 hours depending on the type of vessel. It is recommended to book ferry tickets online in advance to secure a spot, especially during the high season.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the multi-stage journey by plane and subsequent ferry crossing, it is advisable to arrive at least one day before the planned embarkation and schedule an overnight stay in Phuket or Krabi. This allows for a relaxed start to your holiday and ensures that you reach the ferry to the Ko Phi Phi Islands on time. Many hotels near the ferry terminals offer convenient transfer options that further simplify travel planning.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents will usually provide you with a fixed time slot for check-in, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the shipping company and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements as well as the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
