Port information & tips for Basco (Batan Island)
Basco is the picturesque capital of the Batanes Islands and marks the northernmost, untouched outpost of the Philippines. The island impresses with its dramatic cliffs and emerald green hills, exuding a peaceful, authentic charm thanks to the traditional Ivatan culture. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the iconic Basco Lighthouse on the Naidi Hills, the vast Vayang Rolling Hills, and the striking Valugan Boulder Beach with its smooth volcanic stones. Cruise ships usually anchor off the coast and bring guests by tender directly to the Port of Basco in the town center. From this central landing point, the charming stone houses and local markets are easily accessible on foot or by the typical tricycle.
Basco on Batan Island in the Philippines is a remote but extremely charming cruise port, primarily reached via the local Basco Airport (BSO). The port itself is centrally located in the main town of Basco and is accessible for smaller ships, with infrastructure improvements currently underway to further optimize passenger services.
Airplane
Travel to Basco from the DACH region is primarily via long-haul flight to Manila (MNL) or Clark (CRK) in Luzon, followed by a domestic flight to Basco Airport (BSO). Philippine Airlines offers regular flights from Manila and Clark to Basco. The flight time from Manila to Basco is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Basco Airport (BSO) is a small domestic airport located directly in the town of Basco, allowing for a quick onward journey.
Transfer & Local Transport
After arriving at Basco Airport (BSO), you can easily reach the port as well as your accommodation in Basco. The airport is conveniently located within the town limits, so many hotels and guest houses are reachable in just about 5 minutes by tricycle or even on foot. A tricycle ride from the airport to the town center or the port takes only about 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can reach the port from Basco Plaza in a 15- to 20-minute walk along Valugan Road.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long international journey and the necessary domestic connecting flights, which can sometimes be rescheduled due to weather conditions, booking a pre-cruise hotel in Basco is recommended. This allows you a relaxed start to your cruise adventure on Batan Island and simultaneously gives you the opportunity to explore the unique atmosphere of the island in advance. Many accommodations in Basco are just minutes away from the airport and port.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and consider that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
