Cruise port Kuyau Island

Kuyau Island in Papua New Guinea is a remote and fascinating destination, primarily visited as part of expedition cruises. Travel for guests from the DACH region is primarily by plane, as direct road or rail connections to the island's port are not relevant. Due to the long distance and potential domestic flights, arrival on the day before embarkation is strongly recommended.

Airplane

International travel to Papua New Guinea usually takes place via Jackson International Airport (POM) in Port Moresby. This airport does not offer direct connections from the DACH region, which is why connecting flights, for example via Singapore (SIN), Hong Kong (HKG) or Australian cities such as Brisbane (BNE) and Sydney (SYD), are necessary. Plan sufficient time for the entire flight including transfers.

Further Travel & Transfer

From Port Moresby (POM), further travel can be to regional airports or coastal towns, from where embarkation on cruise ships or local transfers to Kuyau Island take place. Please note that the exact logistics depend heavily on your specific cruise itinerary and the place of embarkation. Local domestic flights are often the most efficient method to reach more distant regions of Papua New Guinea. A direct public transfer to the landing point on Kuyau Island is usually not available; the island is mostly reached by tender boat from the cruise ship.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Due to the long international flight and potential domestic connections, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel is essential. It is recommended to plan at least one night in Port Moresby or in the starting port of your cruise in Papua New Guinea to adjust to the time difference and to cushion any flight delays. Many cruise lines also offer hotel packages that include transfers to the ship.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
