Airplane to Papua New Guinea or Australia

For travelers from the DACH region, the journey to Papua New Guinea usually involves international flights to Jacksons International Airport (POM) in Port Moresby, the country's only international airport. Direct flights to Port Moresby are available from major hubs such as Singapore, Hong Kong, or Brisbane (Australia). Alternatively, Cairns (CNS) in Australia is another common starting point for expedition cruises in the region, offering good international connections.

Travel to the Embarkation Port

Since Dobu Island itself is not an embarkation port, you must first reach the starting point of your expedition cruise. Typical embarkation ports for voyages calling at Dobu Island are Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea or Cairns in Australia. Onward travel from Port Moresby to regional ports like Alotau (GUR), the capital of Milne Bay Province, can be done via domestic flights with Air Niugini. Due to the long journey and the specific nature of expedition cruises, we strongly recommend an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel at the embarkation port (e.g., Port Moresby or Cairns). This allows for a relaxed arrival before the start of your cruise and provides an important time buffer for potential flight delays. Since Dobu Island offers no tourist infrastructure on land, all services and supplies are available exclusively via the ship. Your expedition cruise line will take care of all the details of the visit.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will typically receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time—depending on the cruise line and destination—is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The same applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
