Port information & tips for Tioman Island

The paradise island of Tioman in the South China Sea is considered one of Malaysia's most beautiful natural jewels and enchants visitors with its untouched wilderness. The island impresses with dense tropical rainforest, striking granite peaks, and crystal-clear water that invites you to dream while exuding a relaxed, authentic atmosphere. Highlights in the immediate vicinity include the species-rich Tioman Marine Park Centre with its colorful coral reefs and the charming village of Tekek, which delights with its duty-free shopping opportunities and idyllic coastal sections. Cruise ships use the central Tekek Village Pier (Kampung Tekek) as a docking point, which is located directly in the island's main town and provides immediate access to local restaurants, shops, and picturesque hiking trails.

Tioman Island is an enchanting island off the east coast of Malaysia, typically reached from the DACH region by plane followed by a ferry crossing. There are currently no direct commercial flight connections to the island, so the journey always requires a combination of land and sea routes.

Airplane & Transfer

For travel from the DACH region, guests first fly to major international airports on the Malaysian mainland or to Singapore. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) is a main hub; from there, the onward journey to the Mersing or Tanjung Gemok ferry terminals takes about 4 to 5 hours by bus or taxi (approx. 400 km driving distance). Senai International Airport (JHB) near Johor Bahru is significantly closer to Mersing at around 90 kilometers and allows for transfers to the Mersing Jetty in about 2.5 to 3 hours by taxi or private shuttle. Another option is Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), from which buses to Mersing take about 3.5 hours, though additional time should be allowed for the border crossing.

Ferry

The crucial stage to Tioman Island takes place by ferry from one of the two main piers on the mainland: Mersing Jetty in Johor or Tanjung Gemok Jetty (also known as Teluk Gading) in Pahang. The Mersing Jetty is the more well-known departure point, but its ferry times are heavily dependent on the tides. The crossing to Tioman takes between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, depending on weather conditions and the number of stops. The Tanjung Gemok Jetty, located about 35 km north of Mersing, tends to offer more stable and less tide-dependent ferry times. Ferry companies such as Bluewater Express and Cataferry serve the routes, with Cataferry being known for its more comfortable vessels. Booking tickets online in advance is recommended, and a waiting time of 90 to 120 minutes before departure should be planned at the terminal. A marine conservation fee of 30 RM for foreigners is payable at the jetty.

Pre-Cruise Hotel

Given the long journey to the ferry terminals and the variable ferry schedules, particularly from the Mersing Jetty, an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel on the mainland is recommended. In Mersing, you will find various accommodations such as the Hotel Riverside or the Hotel Seri Malaysia Mersing, which allow for a relaxed start to your holiday and sometimes offer parking and shuttles to the jetty. There are also hotels near the Tanjung Gemok Jetty, such as the Hotel Jeti Tg Gemok or the Hotel Seri Malaysia Rompin, which provide a convenient base for the morning ferry crossing. This ensures your cruise experience to Tioman Island begins pleasantly and stress-free.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time – depending on the cruise line and destination area – is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the journey: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.

Since cruise ships anchor off the coast, you can easily reach the picturesque piers by tender boat and find yourself immediately in the midst of tropical nature.

Water Taxis

Flexible water taxis are the most important means of transport on Tioman and allow you a pleasant journey between the various coastal villages as well as to remote snorkeling spots.

Taxis (4WD Vehicles)

At the larger piers such as Tekek, all-terrain taxis await you and offer a direct connection to the east coast of the island thanks to the well-developed jungle road.

On Foot

The island's charming villages can be wonderfully explored on foot, and you can reach many local shops, cafes, and swimming beaches within a few minutes directly from the pier.

To experience the untouched nature of Pulau Tioman at its best, a discovery tour along the west coast and an excursion to the species-rich underwater worlds directly offshore are ideal.

Kampung Tekek

As the lively center of the island, the village offers a charming mix of local life and duty-free shopping opportunities, while the well-developed infrastructure invites you to take a relaxed stroll along the waterfront promenade.

Pulau Renggis

This small island gem lies directly off the coast and, thanks to short boat trips, is a paradise for snorkelers who can discover colorful fish swarms and, with a bit of luck, even sea turtles in the vibrant coral gardens.

Kampung Juara

Located on the quieter eastern side of the island, this picturesque place impresses with its wide sandy beach and the dedicated turtle conservation project, while the drive through the dense jungle simultaneously offers fascinating insights into the island's tropical flora.

Berjaya Tioman Resort & Beach

The Berjaya Tioman Resort is located just a short drive from the tender pier in Tekek and offers cruise guests an excellent infrastructure with an expansive sandy beach and comfortable amenities. The resort is ideal for a relaxed day, as it offers comfortable lounging options alongside direct access to first-class snorkeling spots and a selection of restaurants overlooking the turquoise water. Thanks to its quick accessibility, you can enjoy a perfect combination of tropical nature and professional service in direct proximity to the port. Ideally, take the first tender boats in the morning to secure a preferred spot under the palm trees, and plan the short return trip to the port about ninety minutes before departure.

The way back to the ship on the idyllic island of Tioman is straightforward and relaxed, as distances are short and the locals are very helpful. Always plan a small time buffer for the transfer by boat or jeep to comfortably reach the departure of your tender ship at the main pier in Kampung Tekek.

Water Taxis

Water taxis are the most flexible mode of transport on Tioman and take you directly from remote bays like Salang or Juara back to the main pier in Kampung Tekek. These boats can be easily organized at any hotel jetty or public jetties and also enable a swift return by sea directly to the mooring of the tender boats.

Four-Wheel Drive Taxis (Jeeps)

In the main village of Tekek, yellow jeeps are available at the small island airport as well as in front of the Berjaya Tioman Resort to transport you safely to the port. Thanks to the fixed routes along the west coast, you can comfortably reach the meeting point and enjoy the ride through lush nature while arriving at the pier on time.

On Foot

Within Kampung Tekek, the path to the main pier is located directly by the water and is easy to find thanks to clear orientation along the coastal road. The route is safe as well as easy to see and leads you without detours to the central port entrance, where staff coordinate the return to the cruise ship.
