Malacca is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage site on the west coast of Malaysia and impresses with its rich multicultural history. The city enchants visitors with a unique mix of Malay, Chinese, and European influences, which is reflected in the colorful alleys as well as along the picturesque Melaka River. Highlights include the historical Red Square with Christ Church, the ruins of the Portuguese fortress A Famosa, and the lively Jonker Street with its traditional antique shops. Cruise ships dock at the Melaka International Cruise Terminal on the island of Pulau Melaka, from where the historical center is easily accessible for exploration thanks to a short connection of about three kilometers.
The Malacca (Melaka) cruise port in Malaysia is developing into a modern destination for international cruise ships with the Melaka International Cruise Terminal (MICT). The terminal is conveniently located near the historic city center and is easily accessible thanks to good transport links and a variety of transfer options.
Airplane
For international guests from the DACH region, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) is the nearest major airport, located approximately 81 to 130 kilometers north of Malacca. The travel time to the port is about 1.5 to 2 hours. From KUL, comfortable private transfer services are available directly to the Malacca cruise port to ensure a relaxed arrival. Alternatively, buses such as the StarMart Express can be used from KLIA Terminal 2 to the Malacca Mahkota Medical Centre, with a travel time of around 1 hour 50 minutes. The smaller Malacca International Airport (MKZ) primarily offers regional connections, including flights from Singapore.
Car
Malacca is excellently connected via the North-South Expressway (PLUS Highway, E2). From the direction of Kuala Lumpur, you can reach Malacca after around 145 kilometers in approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The Ayer Keroh Highway (Federal Route 143) connects the city directly to the North-South Expressway via the Ayer Keroh Interchange. Finding a parking space in Malacca city center can be challenging, especially on weekends and public holidays. Parking tickets or the "Melaka Smart Parking App" are often required to use public parking spaces. Direct "Park & Cruise" offers for long-term parkers at the terminal are currently not widespread, which is why using transport services is recommended.
Transfer & Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long journey from the DACH region and to ensure a stress-free start to your cruise, an overnight stay in Malacca or Kuala Lumpur on the day before embarkation is recommended. Private transfer services offer a convenient door-to-door connection from KUL airport or your hotel in Kuala Lumpur directly to the Melaka International Cruise Terminal. Locally in Malacca, the ride-hailing service Grab is known as the "gold standard" for local trips. A ride from the terminal to the historic center (e.g., Dutch Square) takes about 20-30 minutes and costs around 30 MYR. The Melaka International Cruise Terminal (MICT) itself, part of the Melaka Gateway project, will be completed by 2026 and will integrate hotels and shopping facilities, allowing for a comfortable arrival and short distances.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that your travel documents usually include a fixed time slot for check-in, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually about one hour before the scheduled departure.
The following also applies during the voyage: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as mooring and departure times may change at short notice.
