Port information & tips for Tomakomai

Tomakomai is the vibrant gateway to Hokkaido's wild nature, welcoming travelers with a fascinating blend of maritime flair and impressive volcanic landscapes. The port city impresses with its strategic location on the Pacific and serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the pristine beauty of Shikotsu-Toya National Park. Absolute highlights in the nearby area include the deep blue Lake Shikotsu, the striking Tarumae volcano, and the species-rich bird sanctuary at Lake Utonai, all of which are quickly accessible due to their proximity. Cruise ships dock at the modern Tomakomai West Port Cruise Terminal, from which the city center and the central station can be conveniently reached in about 15 minutes by shuttle or taxi.

Tomakomai in Hokkaido is a major Japanese cruise port and is efficiently accessible thanks to its proximity to New Chitose Airport as well as good road and rail connections. Cruise ships usually dock at Tomakomai West Port, which also serves as a ferry terminal.

Airplane

The nearest airport is New Chitose Airport (CTS), located approximately 19 to 20 kilometers from the port. Long-haul flights from the DACH region usually operate via major hubs with connections to New Chitose. From the airport, you can reach JR Minami-Chitose Station, from where the JR Muroran Line takes you to JR Tomakomai Station in about 16 minutes. Arriving the day before is recommended due to the time difference and long flight duration to start your cruise relaxed and, if necessary, use a pre-cruise hotel in Sapporo or near the airport.

Train

The relevant station is JR Tomakomai Station. From there, you can easily reach the Tomakomai West Port Ferry Terminal by taxi in about 5 to 10 minutes (costing approx. 1,800–2,200 ¥) or with Donan Bus line 24 in around 14 to 20 minutes. It is important to explicitly mention "Tomakomai West Port Ferry Terminal" as the destination to the taxi driver. In addition, there are direct bus connections from Sapporo Station to the ferry terminal with a travel time of about 100 to 110 minutes.

Car

The port is excellently connected to the Japanese highway network, particularly via the Do-O Expressway (E5). The Tomakomai-Higashi I.C. and Tomakomai-Chuo I.C. (opened in 2020) exits provide direct access to the city area and port. The drive from Sapporo via the expressway takes about 60 minutes. Ample parking is available at the Tomakomai West Port Ferry Terminal, including designated areas for vehicles traveling by ferry.

Check-in & Embarkation

Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.

The following also applies during the trip: For shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
