Port information & tips for Tokushima
Tokushima on the east coast of Shikoku Island welcomes guests with a fascinating blend of vibrant tradition and untouched natural beauty. The city is world-famous for the Awa-Odori dance festival and captivates with its welcoming atmosphere between forested mountains and glittering waterways. Cultural highlights include the Awa Odori Kaikan with its daily dance performances, as well as a ropeway ride up Mount Bizan for a breathtaking panorama over the region. At the same time, the historic castle ruins of Tokushima invite visitors to take relaxing strolls in the adjacent park. Cruise ships dock at the Tokushima-Komatsushima Port at Shinko Wharf, from where the city center, located about 10 kilometers away, can be easily reached in around 20 minutes thanks to the shuttle buses provided.
As a port on Shikoku Island, Tokushima is a fascinating destination in Japan that is primarily reached as part of fly-and-cruise packages from the DACH region. Since cruise ships often dock at different piers, such as Akaishi Wharf or Okinosu-soto Wharf, which are located in an industrial area outside the city center, organized transfers are recommended.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Tokushima Awaodori Airport (TKS). This airport primarily handles domestic flights, for example from Tokyo-Haneda or Fukuoka. For guests from the DACH region, traveling to Tokushima therefore usually involves a long-haul flight to a major Japanese hub like Tokyo (Narita or Haneda) or Osaka (Kansai), followed by a convenient connecting flight to Tokushima. Tokushima Airport is located only about 11 to 13 kilometers from the city center and the port.
Transfer & Shuttle
From Tokushima Awaodori Airport (TKS), you can comfortably reach Tokushima Station by limousine bus in about 30 to 33 minutes, with costs ranging from around ¥600 to ¥2200. A taxi ride takes about 10 to 13 minutes and costs approximately ¥3200 to ¥4500. In addition, private transfer services and shared taxis provide efficient transportation. From Tokushima Station or, if your ship docks at Akaishi Wharf, from Minami-Komatsushima Station, cruise lines frequently offer shuttle services to the cruise terminal. Alternatively, taxis are available at the pier to take you to the city center or the train station in about 15 to 20 minutes.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight time and the time difference from the DACH region, a relaxed arrival with an overnight stay in a pre-cruise hotel on the day before embarkation is highly recommended. Tokushima offers a selection of over 170 hotels for this purpose. An earlier arrival not only allows for a stress-free embarkation, but also a pleasant acclimatization and the opportunity to gather first impressions of Tokushima's local culture and sights.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will generally receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and bear in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination area - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the cruise: for shore excursions, you should be back on board no later than one hour before departure. Always pay attention to the current announcements and notices on board, as docking and departure times can change at short notice.
