Toba is picturesquely situated on the Pacific coast of Mie Prefecture and is considered the shining gateway to the Shima Peninsula. The port city impresses with its maritime flair as well as the deeply rooted tradition of the Ama pearl divers and offers travelers a harmonious blend of nature and Japanese culture. In the immediate vicinity of the port, the fascinating Mikimoto Pearl Island and the impressive Toba Aquarium invite discovery, while the sacred Ise-Jingu Shrine is easily accessible thanks to excellent connections. Cruise ships mostly use the centrally located Toba Marine Terminal as a port of call. This modern complex lies directly in the heart of the city and, thanks to its immediate proximity to Toba Station and local markets, provides a comfortable starting point for individual explorations.
The port of Toba in Japan, nestled in the picturesque Ise-Shima National Park region, is a charming port of call for cruises, ideally accessible for international guests from the DACH region by plane and train. The Toba Marine Terminal, often referred to as Sadahama Pier, is centrally located and serves as the landing point for tender boats from larger cruise ships. It is a modern, circular building with a tourist information center and direct connections to the city.
Airplane
Arrival from the DACH region is primarily by plane, with Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) being the closest international airport. It is located approximately 40 to 42 kilometers from Toba. From there, you can reach Toba by train in around 2 hours 59 minutes (including transfers at Meitetsu Nagoya and Kintetsu-Nagoya), at a cost of approximately 3,600 to 4,400 JPY. An innovative transfer option is the JAL MaaS service, which enables a combination of high-speed ferry from Centrair to Tsu Nagisamachi followed by a charter taxi to Toba in about 125 minutes. Alternatively, Kansai International Airport (KIX) is another option, from which the train journey to Toba (with transfers in Tennoji and Tsuruhashi) takes around 3 hours 43 minutes and costs approximately 5,000 to 7,500 JPY.
Train
Toba Station is excellently accessible thanks to its central location and connections to the Kintetsu Toba and Shima Lines as well as the JR Sangu Line. From Toba Station, you can reach the Toba Marine Terminal comfortably on foot in just 5 to 8 minutes. From major cities like Nagoya, the journey on the Kintetsu Limited Express takes around 1 hour 35 minutes, while from Osaka you will arrive in Toba in approximately 2 hours on the Kintetsu Limited Express.
Pre-Cruise Hotel & Transfer
Given the long international flights, arriving in Japan at least one day before embarkation is strongly recommended to start your cruise experience relaxed and to prevent jet lag. Many hotels in major cities such as Nagoya or Osaka offer comfortable overnight accommodations. From the airports, taxis are available in addition to train connections. Please note that only a limited number of taxis may be available at the port in Toba itself, but the short walking distances to Toba Station facilitate further local exploration.
Check-in & Embarkation
