Shingu is a fascinating gateway to Japan's spiritual world on the southeast coast of the Kii Peninsula. This charming coastal city impresses with its deep connection to the sacred Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails and offers a harmonious blend of untouched nature and centuries-old traditions. Cultural highlights include the magnificent Kumano Hayatama Taisha Shrine and the spectacularly situated Kamikura Shrine on the mountainside with its sacred Gotobiki-iwa rock. Cruise ships dock at the Sano Wharf (Sano-Pier) of the Port of Shingu, from where the city center and the main train station can be easily reached in about ten minutes thanks to provided shuttle buses or short taxi rides. At the same time, the surrounding area invites you to enjoy relaxed explorations of the mystical temple complexes.
Shingu is an important port in the Wakayama Prefecture and a gateway to the spiritual Kumano region in Japan. Travel from the DACH region usually requires a combination of an international flight and onward travel by train or local transfers. Due to the long travel time, an overnight stay before embarkation is recommended.
Airplane
Arrival is usually via the international airports Kansai International Airport (KIX) near Osaka or Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) near Nagoya. KIX is about 235 km from Shingu, while NGO is closer to Nagoya, from where the onward journey takes place. There are good train connections from both airports to the respective cities to begin the onward journey to Shingu. A direct flight connection to Nanki-Shirahama (SHM), the nearest regional airport, is available from Tokyo-Haneda. From Nanki-Shirahama, you can reach Shingu by bus in about 2 hours 20 minutes or by train in about 1 hour 40 minutes after a short bus transfer to Shirahama Station.
Train
Shingu Station is centrally located and served by the JR Kisei Line (also known as the Kinokuni Line). From Shin-Osaka, you can reach Shingu comfortably with the Limited Express Kuroshio in about four hours. From the direction of Nagoya, the Limited Express Wide View Nanki runs, reaching Shingu in about three and a half to four hours. After arriving at Shingu Station, many sights and the port area are within walking distance or well-connected by short taxi rides or local buses.
Pre-Cruise Hotel
Due to the long flight times from the DACH region and the subsequent onward travel within Japan, an overnight stay before the day of embarkation in Shingu or one of the larger cities such as Osaka or Nagoya is strongly recommended. This allows for a relaxed arrival and acclimatization before the start of your cruise. In Shingu itself, you will find modern hotels such as the Shingu Sunshine Hotel or the Shingu UI Hotel, which offer comfortable stays near the main attractions.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed time slot for check-in with your travel documents, which is binding for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for the journey to the port and take into account that the latest embarkation time – depending on the cruise line and destination – is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
The same applies during the journey: for shore excursions, you should be back on board at least one hour before departure. Always observe the current announcements and the notices on board, as mooring and departure times can change at short notice.
