Sendai, the charming "City of Trees," welcomes cruise passengers as the cultural gateway to the picturesque Tohoku region in northeastern Japan. Cruise ships dock at the modern Takasago Pier of the Port of Sendai-Shiogama, from where the city center, located around 16 kilometers away, can be easily reached by shuttle bus or taxi. In addition, the nearby Nakanosakae Station provides an ideal connection to flexibly discover the vibrant atmosphere and culinary treasures of Sendai thanks to efficient connections.
The cruise port of Sendai (Sendai-ko), a major industrial and commercial hub, is located about 16 kilometers east of Sendai city center and is easily accessible for arriving passengers. Since the pier is located in a logistics zone and not in the city center, cruise lines usually provide shuttle buses to Sendai main station or other central points.
Airplane
The nearest airport is Sendai International Airport (SDJ), located around 14 to 15 kilometers southeast of the city. Thanks to the Sendai Airport Access Line, you can travel directly from the airport to JR Sendai Station in about 25 minutes (local train) or 17 minutes (express train), with the fare costing approximately 610 Yen. For guests from the DACH region, an international flight to Tokyo (Narita NRT or Haneda HND) followed by a journey via Shinkansen is usually recommended. The bullet train reaches Sendai in about 1.5 hours and costs around 10,890 Yen. Due to the long journey from Europe, an overnight stay prior to embarkation is highly recommended.
Train
The central hub for arrival is JR Sendai Station, which features excellent Shinkansen connections from all over Japan, including the fast Tohoku Shinkansen line. From JR Sendai Station, most cruise lines offer shuttle buses to the cruise terminal. Alternatively, taxis are available to take you to the port in about 30 to 40 minutes (cost approx. 5,000 to 6,000 Yen). Another option is the JR Senseki Line to Nakanosakae Station or Tagajo Station, from where you can take a taxi or a local bus to the terminal.
Transfer & Shuttle
Since the cruise terminal is not directly connected to the public transport network, transfers are crucial for a relaxed arrival. Cruise lines frequently offer comfortable shuttle buses directly from JR Sendai Station to the ship. If you prefer individual transfer options, taxis are available at the station and the port at any time. For a stress-free start to your cruise after a long-haul flight from the DACH region, it is advisable to arrive at least one day prior to embarkation and plan an overnight stay in a hotel near JR Sendai Station to explore the city beforehand.
Check-in & Embarkation
Please note that you will usually receive a fixed check-in time slot with your travel documents, which is mandatory for your embarkation. Plan sufficient time for your journey to the port accordingly and keep in mind that the latest embarkation time - depending on the cruise line and destination - is usually scheduled about one hour before the planned departure.
